La Colline au Loup (Laleu Colline) via the Spiémont geodesic chimney

The hike begins at the Spiémont geodesic chimney with its orientation table, then takes you to discover "sacrificial stones" with magnificent cup marks that are said to have been used in ancient rituals. The route then heads to Laleu Colline (Colline au Loup), a small hill with a rocky summit which offers panoramic views of the Middle Vosges from its footbridge. On the way back, the route passes through the Bouyère peat bog before reaching the village of Champdray.

Description of the walk

Start from the village car park on the edge of the D50.

(S/E) Ignore the D50 and take the road downhill to the left. Note the wash house on your left, then turn left. Pass between the church and the town hall, Rue de Laveline du Houx, then continue along Route de Spiémont. At No. 18, leave the tarmac road, turn left onto the carriageway and you will soon reach a fork.

(1) Turn left, pass the telecommunications pylon and continue straight ahead at the four-way fork. A few dozen metres further on, you will find a path climbing to the right.

(2) Follow it to the geodesic chimney.

(3) Facing the chimney, continue right on the path that follows the top of the ridge and arrives at a track. Make a small first turn left then right and continue downhill to a new track. Turn right and arrive at a fork.

(4) Turn left onto the carriage track and you will soon reach a fork (which you will come back to on the way back).

(5) Continue to the right until you find the first "sacrificial stone" and a path on your left.

(6) Follow the small path for about 50 metres and you will find the second "sacrificial stone", partly covered with moss.

(7) After enjoying this somewhat mystical place, turn around and return to the track.

(6) Continue left on this track until you reach a fork in the road.

(8) Continue straight ahead until you reach the Cabane des Gardes (a beautiful hut with a table underneath).

(9) Turn left onto the forest path that climbs steeply. At the four-way fork, continue straight ahead and then follow the path to the summit.

(10) After enjoying the view from the metal footbridge, return to the Cabane des Gardes.

(9) Take the track on the right and you will come to a three-way junction.

(8) Turn right and follow the track until you find a path on the left.

(11) Take this path and you will reach the duckboards and the viewpoint over the Tourbière de la Bouyère.

(12) Then return to the track.

(11) Follow it to the left. At the three-way junction that follows, keep left and continue to a junction at the edge of the woods.

(13) Turn left onto a wilder path and continue to the next fork.

(14) Turn left onto the forest path and continue until you reach a left-hand bend with two paths branching off to the right.

(15) Take the second one, almost opposite. Be careful, the first turn-off is not shown on the IGN map and this can be confusing!
Continue straight ahead until you reach the track you took earlier.

(5) Turn right onto this track and you will soon come to a fork.

(4) Continue straight ahead and you will rejoin the route you have already taken.

(1) Continue straight ahead and, taking the opposite route to the one you took on the way there, return to the car park in the village of Champdray (S/E).

Notes

The route is easy to follow, but the climb to Laleu Hill is quite steep.

Worth a visit

(4) The Spiémont geodesic chimney:
In 1824, the geographical engineers who mapped France erected a pyramid, which has since been demolished. Since 1906, there has been a nine-metre-high stone geodesic signal at the top of the mountain. This geodesic chimney was used to shelter the plumb line needed to make markings and take angle measurements for mapmaking in the early 20th century.

(13) La Bouyère bog.

We hesitated several times before finally turning back.
Perhaps we weren't paying enough attention.

A beautiful hike that is fairly easy to follow, with two challenging sections on fairly steep climbs, but the rewards are worth the effort and the return trip is easier.
There are some beautiful viewpoints, including views of the valleys and protected peat bogs, as well as beautiful, peaceful panoramas of the Vosges mountains.
In autumn, the different types of vegetation you encounter provide superb variations in colours and landscapes.
