Geodetic chimney of Spiémont

This walk provides quick access to a beautiful viewpoint at the summit of Spiémont, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Vosges and the Vologne valley. The presence of a geodesic chimney and an orientation table complete the hike.

Description of the walk

Start from the village car park located on the edge of the D50.

(S/E) Ignore the D50 and take the road downhill to the left. Note the wash house on your left, then turn left. Cross the D50, pass between the church and the town hall, Rue de Laveline du Houx, then continue along Route de Spiémont. At No. 18, leave the tarmac road, turn left onto the carriageway and you will soon reach a fork.

(1) Turn left, pass the telecommunications pylon and continue straight ahead at the four-way fork. A few dozen metres further on, you will find a path climbing to the right.

(2) Follow it to the geodesic chimney.

(3) Continue downhill along the access track to the chimney. At the next fork, keep left and rejoin the route you took earlier.

(2) Continue along the track and, taking the opposite route to the one you took on the way up, return to the village car park (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 720 m - Car park in the village of Champdray - Église de la Nativité de Notre-Dame (Champdray)

  3. 2 : km 1.07 - alt. 738 m - Path on the right

Notes

It is possible to do the hike with all-terrain pushchairs by following the access track to the summit (return route of the hike).

The 9-metre geodesic chimney was used to shelter the plumb line needed to take bearings and angle measurements for mapmaking in the early 20th century.

The walk is short and pleasant. The path that “climbs to the right” is a bit of a slog if you’re not in good shape.
The view from the information board is lovely.
