The summit of Castel Vieil from Roquebillière

A very beautiful hike offering stunning views of the Vésubie Valley. The imposing Villette ridge overlooks the return trail. The route between points (8) and (9) bears witness to an ancestral agricultural past.

Description of the walk

Park in the centre of Roquebillière next to the town hall.

(S/E) Cross the square in front of this building and turn left onto Avenue Corniglion-Molinier for about 100 metres. In the left-hand bend, take the staircase on the right called Promenade Gatti. At the bottom of the stairs, continue along the promenade of the same name. You will reach the Templar Church at marker 35.

(1) Turn left and follow the signs for Cime de Castel Vieil. Cross the Route de la Bourgade quickly and with great caution. Follow the yellow markings, then cross the Route de Plan Gasc with caution. Continue until you reach Rue Marchier.

(2) Cross it carefully. Opposite, take the carriage road, which quickly becomes a footpath again before rejoining Rue Marchier.

(3) Leave the road just after an old renovated house and take the wooded path on the right. You will reach Chemin du Cervagn.

(4) Cross it carefully, then continue straight ahead on the path. Pass marker 38, continue along the path and reach the crossroads at marker 38a.

(5) Continue straight ahead, following the yellow markings. Take the path in Ravin du Caïre and climb one last time to reach the summit of Cime de Castel Vieil.

(6) Retrace your steps and descend to the junction at marker 38a.

(5) Take the path on the right. After about 50 metres, you will come to a crossroads; take the path on the right. The path disappears but reappears in the wooded area. Follow this beautiful path, which is reinforced in places by stone retaining walls. You will reach the junction marked by marker 39. Please note: this marker is not shown on the map but has been replaced by a cairn.

(7) Turn completely left downhill to reach an unnumbered marker at a place called La Clua.

(8) Turn right at this crossroads. This route takes you through an area of ancient ruins and abandoned terraces, evidence of the commune's agricultural past. You will reach the Cervagne road.

(9) Continue straight ahead on the road, then turn right onto a track. Cross the Vallon de Cervagne stream, then follow it on the right bank until you reach a fire hydrant.

(10) Turn left just before the hydrant. Walk alongside a chestnut grove and follow a small stream.

(11) Cross the tarmac rural road of Counigou, continue straight ahead, walking carefully along this same road. At marker 225, follow the signs for Roquebillière. You will soon arrive at Boulevard du Docteur Roques.

(12) Take it carefully on the right to enter Roquebillière. After the church, turn left to reach the town hall (S/E).
