Description of the walk

(S/E) From La Chalp, follow the Col de l’Izoard road to Brunissard; this road follows theGR®5, marked in red and white.

(1) At the entrance to the village, take the road on the left. Head to the crossroads by the stopover lodge.

(2) Leave theGR®5here to cross the Rivière stream.
Turn right onto a path where a wooden sign points towards Col du Cros.
This path winds its way up through the forest and opens out onto a clearing below the Col du Cros; reach the pass via a steep climb.
At the pass, take a short detour to the right to admire a monolith and enjoy a beautiful view of the valley below.

(3) Then head towards the Clapeyto chalets along a mountain-side path that crosses a scree slope. Arrive at the small pass.

(4) Turn right onto the path that joins the track leading to the chalets. Turn left and you’ll easily reach the Clapeyto chalets.

(5) Continue westwards along the well-marked path that runs alongside the Torrent du Peyron at the start, then head into the valley. Then turn south near the Col de Pansier.

(6) You will then enter the area of the lakes; follow them to reach the Col de Néal with ease.

(7) Continue south-east and reach the Col du Lauzon via a path that becomes stony near the pass.

(8) Begin the descent from the Col du Lauzon; steep at the start, it requires a bit of care as it crosses scree slopes. Reach Lac du Lauzon.

(9) Continue the descent through scree slopes, forests and the remains of winter avalanches. Arrive at the Gardère hut.

(10) Take the level path which joins theGRP® Tour de la Dent de Ratier a little further on.

(11) Cross the Combe Bonne stream; a sign points towards La Chalp.

(12) Directly above the hamlet of Le Coin, leave theGRP® to the right and take the path leading to La Chalp (S/E).

A magnificent hike with sections through the forest on both the ascent and descent, and a central section on a high plateau (2400–2500 m) that brings to mind the barren landscapes of Iceland. I did the hike in early July; despite the time of year, it was still quite chilly, and there was a strong wind on the plateau, which gave the hike a bit of a polar feel! Thank you for this lovely route!

A lovely circular route that avoids the busy climb along the track. The descent from the Col du Lauzon is stunning, but unfortunately Lac du Lauzon was dry.

I didn’t quite manage to complete this hike because the snow blocked the path after the Col du Cross and again after the Clapeyto chalets.
