Description of the walk

(S/E) From the Demouge sawmill car park, stay on the left bank of the Ruisseau des Belles Filles stream. Go up Rue de Chauveroche and follow it until you reach a right-hand bend, near a pond.

(1) Turn left onto the forest path just after the water tower. Cross the bridge over the Ruisseau des Belles Filles. Immediately turn right, on the right bank of the stream, onto the steep path to rejoin the forest path higher up, which turns left (in a hairpin bend).

(2) Take the path on the right. Continue along the stream to rejoin the forest path further up. Cross it again. Continue straight ahead, following the markings.

(3) (Alt. 913 m) Arrive at the Belles Filles lake. Walk along the left side of the lake. Follow the path that climbs to the left, heading west, and winds through the trees to join theGR®533at an elevation of 996 metres. Take it to the left.

(4) Arrive at La Planche des Belles Filles ski resort
Turn left onto the path that climbs east of the ski lift.
Pass by the monument to the FFI (French Forces of the Interior who resisted in 1944).

(5) Arrive at the Haute-Planche refuge (100 m to the right of the path). Turn left.
Continue climbing to reach Roche Fendue, the highest point. (20 m to the left of the path)

(6). Continue to the left. Descend and arrive at Chaume du Querty. Beautiful flora and superb views.

(7) After the refuge, turn right. After 200 m in the forest, turn left. Turn right onto the forest road and continue to the Col du Querty.

(8) (Elevation 833) At the pass, leave the forest road, turn left, 90°, due north, onto the path that descends. Cross a stream. Continue downhill on the steep, stony path. When you reach the first houses in Lepuix, turn right and you will arrive at the Demouge des Hauts-Fer sawmill and the car park where you started (S/E).

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

The Demouge sawmill in Lepuix
A high-iron sawmill dating from 1878, it is now owned by the municipality. The sawing mechanism uses water brought in by an overhead wooden canal to a bucket wheel. This use of water is ancient and was the main driving force behind mining operations and mills.

The Priory of Saint-Benoît de Chauveroche
This is a monastic priory of the Order of Saint Benedict, founded in 1980. During the week, the community welcomes individuals and groups who wish to share their prayers and their lives.

La Planche des Belles Filles
At an altitude of 1,148 metres, this small mid-mountain resort has been in the spotlight thanks to three Tour de France stage finishes at its summit in 2012, 2014 and 2017.

The legend of La Roche Fendue and the Belles Filles lake
Legend has it that La Planche des Belles Filles owes its name to the daughters of Auxelles who fled the Swedish invaders in the 17th century. Betrayed by the footprints in the snow of a child who had come to warn them of the danger, they threw themselves into the Planche pond. Enraged, the Swedish leader struck and split a rock with the edge of his sword.

La Chaume du Querty
This chaume is part of the Ballons Comtois nature reserve. Abandoned with the decline of mountain farming in the 1950s, the chaume has been the subject of ecological management measures. These actions have made it possible to establish extensive grazing and maintain an open landscape favourable to capercaillies.

Very beautiful hike
The climb up to the lake is a bit challenging, but honestly, it's doable
Even with the rain from the day before
And then arriving at the lake is worth the effort 😊
Less interesting up to the boardwalk, where there are more walkers, but then there are some beautiful stretches to the car park where you started
Beautiful hike
Thank you for the very clear comments

A beautiful route, mostly shaded by trees, which provides welcome coolness during the climb. It's quite a tough climb up to the Belles Filles lake, but then it gets easier. When you arrive at the station, there are several places with tables and benches for picnics. There are a few steep sections during the descent.

A very beautiful hike in warm weather, simply following the red disc; we did not pass by the orientation table.
At the intersection of point 6 (the split rock), we followed the blue triangle markings and made a round trip to the orientation table.
The climb or descent in both directions is quite difficult over the rocks, but the path after the Beles Filles pond to the Col du Querty is very pleasant with beautiful views.
We covered 11 km.

A good hike with a steep climb at the start, but then mostly flat terrain.
We stopped for a picnic at the Col du Quercy and enjoyed the peace and quiet of this walk 😊 It's a shame the weather was overcast on the boardwalk.

We did it in reverse, arriving at the lake for our lunch break. Superb rondo, perfect explanations. The climb was supposed to be steep, so we did it on the way down. The route was well shaded and pleasant in this hot weather.

Hike completed on 15/07/2023 with my partner and our 18-month-old daughter in a baby carrier.
No particular issues, the route is very well marked.
A lovely surprise when we arrived at the Belles Filles pond.
Small paths along the hillsides in the middle of the woods, far from roads and motorable tracks... perfect 😀
We recommend this hike.
It is 9,860 metres long, according to GPS, and took 3½ hours including a short break for lunch.
See you soon.
The cats 😉

A very beautiful "sporty" snowshoe hike.
Only comment: when you arrive at Planche des Belles Filles, the markings are not clear when there is a lot of snow, as was the case for me; I took the ski slope to the summit and then had to descend along the woods to find the trail, which I lost again near the summit. Not knowing the area and despite the app and advice from people there, I lost a total of 45 minutes finding the markings (perhaps too far apart?). It's not a real problem, but with the health crisis and the 6 p.m. curfew, it could have been problematic.

A very beautiful hike that deserves its classification as "difficult" because the climb is quite steep.
