La Blanche via Lac de Puy Aillaud and the Belvédère des Trois Refuges viewpoint

This is a must-do hike in Vallouise, offering views of the Écrins, the Cerces and the Queyras, and in particular, thanks to its proximity, the Pelvoux, the Pic sans Nom and the Ailefroide.

Description of the walk

In Vallouise, cross the Gyr river and take the D504 to the right of the church towards Puy Aillaud. After a 5 km climb, park in the car park at the end of the hamlet on the left-hand side of the road.

(S/E) From the car park, go up the road, past the ski lift and follow the hamlet until you see the sign for La Blanche.

(1) At the sign, take the lane on the right. Follow it for 250 m until the next intersection.

(2) At the sign, take the path on the right and at the next intersection follow the markings on the left (this intersection is not shown on the map). The well-marked path climbs steeply through the mountain pastures. After a steep climb, it comes out onto a large grassy plateau with a signpost.

(3) Pass the sign and follow the line of cairns to the west. The well-marked trail crosses a few steep passages. It leads to the left side of the cliff to a short cable-assisted passage marked by a large red dot, which allows you to reach the ridge. Follow the cairns and cross a rocky shoulder using your hands (very easy climbing with large holds). Climb up a couloir and you will see the gigantic cairn at the summit.

(4) Return in the same direction to the grassy ledge and then to the sign.

(3) Turn 90° left towards Lac de Puy Aillaud.

(5) Behind the large cairn at the lake, take the path eastwards, following the cairns (be careful not to take the path north-east of the lake). After a long traverse, this path leads to a junction of unmarked paths.

(6) Go up the trail on the left to the northwest to visit the viewpoint of the three refuges. On a clear day, you can see the Sélé, Pelvoux and Écrins refuges.

(7) Descend in the opposite direction to return to the previous crossroads.

(6) Take the trail on the left and continue to a new intersection.

(8) Take the hairpin bend to the right. After a few switchbacks, the trail descends diagonally before passing through a larch forest. It then joins a lane on the map. However, this is no longer possible on the ground.

(9) Take a small cow path on the left, cross the Riou de l'Alp and rejoin the lane. Follow it to the water retention basin and then the upper station of the Préron chairlift. Pass under the chairlift and descend south-east towards Puy Aillaud. You will come out on the road you took on the way up.

(1) Descend on the left to the car park (S/E).

Practical information

This route requires a good level of fitness.
For those who only want to do the Blanche round trip, the elevation gain is 1,380 metres over a distance of 11.6 kilometres.
(3) It is possible to connect directly to the (5) to only visit the viewpoint.

From the grassy plateau, the route is marked by the GPS track. Follow this track carefully, as some sections of the IGN map no longer exist in reality and vice versa. Part of the path leading to the water retention basin is not in the right place on the IGN map.

I made a video with the names of the peaks, which describes the atmosphere and shows the route.

The duration indicated by the software is based on a pace of 350m of elevation gain per hour.
Please recalculate based on your own pace, elevation gain and distance.

You are hiking in the heart of the Ecrins National Park.

An exceptional hike, but not for everyone the 1,360 m elevation gain to reach the summit is over 6.5 km and very steep, with breathtaking views at the top. There is only one tricky section, which is well equipped, but the rocks are very slippery, so take care. The view from the Belvédère du Glacier Blanc is magnificent and just as beautiful as the view from the Belvédère des 3 Refuges, but without the additional 150 m elevation gain

We followed this route at the beginning of August this year, in reverse and over two and a half days with a light bivouac. It is simply breathtaking! The views are exceptional, especially at the viewpoint of the three refuges and at the lake where we slept. The lake is superb: perfectly shaped and crystal clear, it is incredibly quiet, and its smooth surface offers spectacular reflections of the sunsets and sunrises we admired there.
The 360-degree panorama from the summit of La Blanche is worth the detour, just a few metres below 3,000 metres. It's a feast for the eyes!
The elevation gains and losses make this route suitable for people who are fit and in good physical condition.
Thank you for sharing!

I've done this route at least ten times over the past 30 years, and I wanted to see what the Visorando guide had to say. I have no complaints; it's very well done.

Hike completed on 2 July. Steep snowfields still present and significant at the end. We used ice axes and crampons. Magnificent panorama at the summit. Very beautiful loop.

Completed on Saturday, 27 July 2024, camping at Lac de Puy Aillaud, only three groups of hikers encountered.
It was a magnificent hike, and thank you for the video, which helps to show that the cable crossing isn't as tricky as it looks. The view from La Blanche is truly magnificent and well worth the extra climb.
I recommend camping at the lake, which offers opportunities to photograph the Milky Way and a magnificent sunrise. In addition, as the rest of the route is mainly east-facing, there are lots of marmots out in the morning on the way back to the car park, and we also spotted a few chamois on the heights.

Yes, but before arriving at the MAM, there is an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, etc. during the first few days, which causes fatigue, but everything returns to normal within a few days.
As you did before climbing Vieux Chaillol, it is advisable to do two or three acclimatisation hikes before tackling peaks close to 3,000 metres.
Health problems at high altitude start at 2,500 metres, as mentioned in the first paragraph.

I am also over 60 years old, and I have climbed quite a few peaks over 3,000 metres. Well, not hundreds of them!
In March, in Nepal, I climbed to 5,416 metres without experiencing any problems with the altitude. Previously, I had climbed to 5,200 metres in India and Peru.
Acute mountain sickness occurs at altitudes above 3,000 metres, and I experienced it simply because I climbed too quickly.
In Nepal, I spent three days acclimatising in Manang, at an altitude of 3,500 metres. In the days leading up to the climb to Thorong La (5,416 metres), I only walked for four to five hours a day, without exceeding 500 metres of elevation gain.
Many people I met were suffering from headaches, even though they had followed the acclimatisation steps. Personally, I only had a bad headache at 4,450 m, on the last stage before the pass. I'm not sure it was AMS, as it could easily have been caused by other factors such as fatigue, the cold or the days spent walking.
In any case, in France, apart from mountaineering, there is very little chance of suffering from AMS.
I live in Avignon, and even though you can go on long hikes with quite a bit of elevation gain, it's difficult to exceed 2,000 metres in Provence!
I spent three days in La Bérarde in July and eight days in Savoie in late July/early August, and I did ten hikes where I was able to climb between 2,400 and 3,092 metres.
This enabled me to climb the Grand Chaillol (3,163 m) on Friday 18 August without any problems related to the altitude. It took me nine hours from the Chaillol 1,600 station, with an actual walking time of seven and a half hours.
I'm surprising myself because 10 years ago, I wouldn't have been able to do this hike. I've improved my endurance, breathing and stamina as I've got older, which should normally be the opposite... I don't think I would have been able to climb Grand Chaillol even at the age of 30... The human body is full of mysteries!

It takes several days to adjust to the altitude before attempting to climb such peaks.
This is especially true for those over 60.
Living in Briançon, I have never encountered this problem, which has allowed me to easily complete more than 200 hikes, including 32 summits over 3,000 metres and some mountaineering routes that take two days to complete in a single day, such as the Aiguille du Goléon.
I moved in 2019 and currently live in Charente Maritime. Now that I live at sea level, I really feel the need to adapt and have to take things gradually.
I have no problem adapting to the mid-range mountains of the Massif Central, but the Pyrenees are a different story.

Doc Arverne: It's a real shame you didn't climb up to La Blanche, because the view from there is breathtaking... The climb isn't really difficult, the only slight challenge is crossing a section using a rope. It took me 45 minutes to reach the viewpoint.
Of course, I'm in good shape, which is definitely an advantage!
In any case, if you find yourself back in the magnificent Vallouise valley, don't hesitate to go up to La Blanche, you won't regret it!

A magnificent hike without climbing La Blanche due to lack of training (first hike of the holidays... a bit challenging at 60 years old, slightly overweight and living at an altitude of 300 metres... LOL... but still used to the mountains of Auvergne).
We made up for it by taking our time.
A splendid route.
There is also the Glacier Blanc viewpoint to see along the way (below the 3 refuges viewpoint).
People from Puy Aillaud advised us afterwards to do it the other way round, as the climb is more gradual, so we'll try that next time...
Between points 8 and 9, the local signage takes you back down to the Fontaine Froide, so you no longer pass through the retention basin.
At the end of the day, there was a herd of cows at the Fontaine Froide. With their numerous calves, they were a little threatening, so we decided to be cautious and go around them via the higher route.

I added 100 metres of elevation gain because on the way back from Bric Froid, I climbed to a peak near Col des Thures to get a nice view of Ristolas...
I really like Queyras because you can climb up to 3,000 metres fairly easily, and I've done about twenty great hikes there!
If I do the Aiguille de la Grande Sassière, I'll be sure to post a comment on VisoRando...
