Reach Les Rougiers via the D1, drive up to the top of the village, taking Rue de la Rousse then Rue Sainte-Anne. Park near a water reservoir.
(S/E) Go up the street on the right until you reach a dog breeder's house on a bend.
(1) Take the path that climbs up to the right, marked in yellow and red. Continue for 800 metres.
(2) At a cairn, take the path that descends and then climbs again. Be very careful, as the path is difficult to see.
(3) When you reach the first intersection with a cairn, continue straight ahead. A faint red marker is partially visible. Do not take the path that branches off to the left, as it can be confusing (it is not shown on IGN maps but is clearly visible).
(4) At this point, a cairn marks a path that turns left at a 90° angle. Take this path, which climbs steeply through the woods to the summit of Piegu.
(5) From there, a large cairn (photo) marks a 360° panorama with a magnificent view. Continue a few metres to reach the Piegu oppidum.
Follow the path along the ridge, marked with green signs, and descend slowly.
(6) At an elevation of 564 metres, turn right and continue along the path until you reach a junction.
(7) Take the wide path, Les Plaines, on the left, heading south towards the rest area, marked with yellow and red signs. Shortly afterwards, leave a forest track on your left that leads to Cambon (marked by a sign).
(8) When you reach the D95, cross it and take the Capelette track opposite.
On this wide track, you will overlook the Vallon de la Capellette. Approach the ravine with caution to see some magnificent rocks. Continue along the main track without leaving it.
(9) At this point, turn left and continue straight ahead, descend sharply into the valley, cross the stream (dry if there has been no rain) and climb back up to an intersection. Leave the track that climbs back up to the small departmental road and continue for a few metres.
(10) Before a large bend, which also climbs back up towards the departmental road, take the path that descends steeply to the right (this path is not marked on the IGN map), a cairn serves as a landmark. Descend to the stream and follow it on the left bank until you reach a new intersection, marked with green signs.
(11) Take the path on the left, marked by a cairn, which climbs into the woods towards the Fontaine de la Guillandiére, consisting of three arches with a metal bench opposite. Be careful, this path is not very visible.
Pass the fountain on your right and take the path that climbs up to a track.
(12) Turn left and continue to an intersection, where you will find the junction of the loop that leads to the fountain.
(10) Go up to the departmental road and go down to the right along the road until you reach the intersection where Castrum de Saint-Jean is indicated on a tourist sign.
(13) Go up the track on the left that leads to the ruins of the 12th-century Château de Saint-Jean. On the right, enjoy a magnificent panoramic view.
(14) Continue along the path on the left that runs alongside the fortress to descend to the chapel. Further down is an orientation table, then the village and its cave dwellings.
After visiting the ruins of the village, go back up a little and take the path on the right, passing several oratories marked with green signs.
Follow this path downhill to return to your vehicle in the car park (S/E).
