Park your vehicle in the Rougiers car park, near the D1.
(S/E) From the car park, head south to the junction with Avenue de Brignoles. Cross and continue straight ahead along Rue Sainte-Anne, which takes you through the village, past a fountain and a beautiful mosaic on a bell tower.
(1) At the top of the village, continue straight ahead, passing a large cross on your left, and follow the signs for "cité médiévale" (medieval town). After 100 metres, leave the road that branches off to the left (Les Glacières) and stay on the tarmac road that turns right.
At the hairpin bend, take the yellow-marked path on the right.
Climb to the top of the valley, leaving two paths on your right, until you reach a small concrete cistern, which is the Rougiers water supply pump.
(2) Go back down the same path for about 30 metres and turn right onto an unmarked but fairly easy-to-see path. This balcony path offers a superb view of the Pre-Alps and leads to a forest track.
(3) There, take the path on the left, which leads directly to the ruins of Castrum Saint-Jean.
The ruins are worth visiting for the superb panorama, not to mention the orientation table and the shelter with its beautiful stalagmite.
(4) Turn around and head back along the forest road until you reach a crossroads.
(5) Take the DFCI track on the right (Cambon).
Not far away, take the first path on the left, clearly visible with a beautiful oak tree. Stay on this path, continuing straight ahead, until you reach a clearing with some ruins.
(6) Go around the ruins on the right to take the path that approaches the road and then moves away from it, heading south-west. Stay on this path, continuing straight ahead, until you reach a forest track.
(7) Turn left onto this track to reach the place known as "des quatre chênes" (four oak trees). There is a picnic area and a dry pond with a small bridge.
(8) Head south, cross the road and take the Sentier de la Capelette on the left.
Go down to the bottom of the valley, passing three paths on your right, until you reach a fork.
(9) Turn left and, after a few dozen metres, continue straight ahead.
Cross the stream, which is often dry. Turn right at the next fork.
(10) A few metres further on, turn right again onto a path that descends, indicated by a cairn and a green marker.
This fairly wild path, which is not shown on the IGN map, descends into the valley and runs alongside the stream.
Take the first path that climbs up to the left, easily recognisable by the wild vegetation, to reach the Guillandière spring.
(11) Continue along the path to the left of the fountain to reach a forest track. Turn right, pass a cistern and continue to a crossroads.
(12) Turn left (red arrow), leave two paths on your left and continue to an intersection.
(13) Turn right and take the track that climbs gently uphill. At the next intersection, take a small path on the left (not signposted) indicated by an orange arrow.
Climb for about 700 metres.
(14) Take the first path on the left. This descends along the Défens ridge, steeply at first, with beautiful views of the village of Rougiers.
Follow the path, which heads west-southwest before turning right at a 90° angle. Go through the valley, pass through a gate (on the right) and rejoin the road.
Pass the cemetery and turn left at a 90° angle.
(15) Follow Rue du Pays-Haut to the right, below the chapel. At a small square, turn right and take the second street on the left (Rue de la Ferrage).
(16) When the street bends left at a 90° angle, turn right into a passageway under the houses.
Turn left when you come out and, at the crossroads, turn right into Rue de la Rousse to return to the starting point (S/E).
