The call of the open sea from the Luri ridges

This walk, starting from the hamlet of Campu, reaches the ridge above the Luri valley and takes you past the chapel and bell tower of San Salvatore before reaching the abandoned hamlet of Mata, offering a superb view over the Luri valley all the way to the sea, with the Island of Elba in the background. Largely shaded, the route follows paths that are mostly very well maintained; the yellow markings are a little sporadic, but the trail is very clear. The downside of the shaded conditions is that there are relatively few viewpoints, though those that do exist are always very beautiful.

Description of the walk

To reach the start of this walk, take the access road to the hamlet of Campu, turning right off the D180 when coming from Bastia. At the entrance to the hamlet, there is a car park on the right.

(S/E) Take the narrow lane uphill and turn left at the patisserie; follow the narrow lane through the hamlet and continue along a dirt track which soon leads into the oak woodland.

(1) Carry on straight ahead and climb the hill to reach the San Salvatore Chapel (various names may be used depending on the website).

(2) Head towards the sea on the right, and follow the fairly wide, well-cleared path as it climbs gently.

(3) Walk past the isolated bell tower on the ridge and carry on, enjoying the lovely views through the gaps in the vegetation.

(4) Ignore the path on the right that leads back down to the hamlet of Campu, and continue slightly below the ridge towards the abandoned hamlet of Mata (views across the whole valley and out to sea, with the Island of Elba in the background; feel free to wander through the ruins, but take care).

(5) Then turn back and return to the previous junction.

(4) Take the path on the left to head back down towards the hamlet of Campu: a fairly steep descent with some quite stony sections. This is the least well-maintained part of the route. Return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

No facilities in the hamlet of Campu (apart from a bakery); there is a small supermarket nearby in Luri.

There is no water along the route.

From the hamlet of Mata, you can continue on to the Mata fountain: the path is marked by a fairly inconspicuous wooden sign below the ruins of the hamlet – on the north side. Allow 10 minutes for the return journey.

To reach it, the route suggests approaching it via the ridges overlooking it to the north and returning via the village of Luri.

This short walk is an alternative to the ascent to the Tower of Seneca. It allows you to set off directly from the Col de Santa Lucia along a track (not a road) that is relatively easier: no scree and few exposed rocks. The path is very well maintained; it follows the ridge along the watershed, offering breathtaking views over the Luri valley with the Island of Elba in the background and, at times, even Italy. On the final stretch, you can also enjoy the view to the west and of Seneca’s Tower on the other side of the pass. As this is a round trip, the duration can easily be adjusted to suit your preferences. Much of the route is shaded by the maquis.

The trail starts at the northern end of the long beach of Macinaggio, covered with a thick layer of Posidonia leaves. The route, marked in yellow, follows the rugged coastline and is punctuated by two Genoese towers. Superb views of the neighbouring islands of Capraia and Elba. Some Corsican specialities, the Filles du Cap on the beach (see photos). Caution! This is an extremely fragile area with a wealth of flora and fauna.

A superb coastal route where the path alternates between beaches and small climbs to Capandola Bay. The terrain changes completely as you now have to climb 130 metres to reach a small pass, with an exceptional view of the Finocchiarola Islands on one side and Barcaggio Bay on the other. The path runs along the cliffs, descends to the Agnello Tower and then levels out to Barcaggio. The only difficulty lies in the length of the route.

Like a pointing finger, Cap Corse seems to point in the direction of Genoa, which was for a long time the dominant power in Corsica. The Republic left behind a series of stone towers that were intended to provide initial coastal defence. Between Macinaghju and the island of Giraglia, four of them still stand guard. The proposed route connects them.
