Jaun - Gruyères

Please note: the section between (10) and (11) is closed for works until the end of 2025. For more information, visit: La-Gruyere/Randonnees-pedestres. See also the "Practical information" section

During thissecond stage, the Jaunbach will be your companion for a long time. After Im Fang, it becomes the Jogne, which will then lead you to Lake Montsalavens and the dam. You will follow the path through the wild gorges of the Jogne. In Broc, you will pass by the famous Cailler chocolate factory. Your route will also take you past the chapel of Notre-Dame des Marches. You will arrive in Gruyères via its medieval castle. Don't miss out on tasting the moitié-moitié fondue.

Description of the walk

(S) From the Hôtel de la Cascade, head west on the main road to the nearby post office. Take the path on the left to reach the Alte Kirchegasse. Ignore the first bridge over the stream and continue on the Furliweg, staying on the right bank of the Jaunbach. You will reach another bridge.

(1) Cross over to the other bank of the Jaunbach and find another bridge.

(2) Return to the right bank of the Jaunbach and cross the stream again as you enter the village of Im Fang. Join the Jaun Pass road in the centre of the village

(3) Heading west, continue along this road for a few metres and cross the Jaunbach once more. On the Sportpaltz Weg, follow the Jaunbach. Change banks at the Hinteri Weid path. Continue along the edge of the stream to a gravel pit at a place called Le Brésil.

(4) Shortly after this quarry, change banks and return to the Fornys chalet.
Note: This is the point where German-speaking Switzerland ends and French-speaking Switzerland begins. As a result, the Jaunbach is now called the Jogne.

(5) Stay on trail No. 3, follow the Jogne, alternating between the right and left banks, until you reach a bridge in front of another gravel pit at a place called Sous les Vanels.

(6) Head north, taking the Forêt de l'Ermitage trail to reach the Route des Arses.

(7) Turn left onto Route des Arses, after a few hundred metres, turn right onto Route des Charnières, then Rue du Centre. Continue through Charmey until you reach the Coop on the left at the corner of Rue du Plan.

(8) Continue along Rue du Plan, then follow Chemin du Lac. Cross the peninsula and you will come to a footbridge.

(9) Take the footbridge over Lake Montsalvens and continue along the Jogne to the Monsalvens dam

(10) At the dam, follow the signs for Gorges de la Jogne. This route features stairs, footbridges, small wooden bridges and tunnels. Gradually leave the Jogne river behind and you will come out onto the Montsalvens road at Broc Fabrique, Chocolaterie Cailler.

(11) Take Rue de Montsalvens to the junction with Route du Pessot.
Turn left onto Route du Pessot, then immediately turn right onto Rue de Forcel. At the end of this street, after a small car park on the left, walk along a field on Rue du Tir and then Impasse du Belvedère. Look for a sign indicating the Notre-Dame des Marches chapel.

(12) Take a small path to the car park, then to the Notre-Dame des Marches pilgrimage chapel.

(13) Turn south, passing in front of the restaurant L'Abri des Marches, gradually approaching the Sarine river and following it to the Pont Qui Branle bridge.

(14) Cross this sheltered bridge to the other bank of the Sarine. Follow the Pont road, which curves in an arc, until you reach the Intyamon road.

(15) Cross the road and, directly opposite, take the steps and then a good path to climb up to Gruyères Castle.

(16) From the west gate of the castle, descend towards the village of Gruyères and head for the Hôtel de la Fleur de Lys, at the other end of the village, which is today's stopover. (E)

Notes

Before setting off, check the SuisseMobilewebsite for any trail closures.

Currently (September 2025), the section between points (10) and (11) of the Jogne Gorges is closed. A diversion is in place via the village of Châtel sur Montsalvens. (Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025).

This hike follows the Alpenpanorama Weg trail, which is marked on Swiss maps. At each major junction, you will find signposts with a green sticker marked with the number 3 to indicate this trail.

  • Mountain equipment, including good footwear, is required.
  • Refreshments available in Charmey.

Accommodation:

Worth a visit

Jaun and its waterfall.
The lake and dam at Monsalvens.
The Jogne Gorges.
Im Fang, the German-French language border. It should be noted that the dialect spoken in Jaun is so distinctive that even most German-speaking Swiss people do not understand it.
The Cailler chocolate factory in Broc.
The village of Gruyères and its castle.

Hello Christophe,
Thank you for this information.
This route is part of the "Alpen Panorama Weg" trail, marked with the No. 3 sign, from Rorschach to Geneva
as suggested on the SwitzerlandMobility website
This website is updated daily with information about trail closures and always suggests alternative routes for national trails.

However, I think it is important not to send hikers there only to have them come back disappointed.

Admittedly, the section of the Gorges de la Jognes (between points (10) and (11)) is closed (which is a shame because the route is superb), but a diversion has been put in place while the work is being carried out. This diversion is marked in orange on the SuisseMobile map and passes through the village of Châtel sur Montsalavens.
It is therefore important to consult this website before setting off (this applies to all national and regional routes in Switzerland)
I will add this information to the Practical Information section of this hike's page.

Hello,
The gorges are currently closed and access is prohibited. Reinforcement work is underway and the reopening is expected in 2026. Information found on a Swiss website https://fribourg.ch/fr/la-gruyere/randon...
Thank you for suggesting this hike, which I have already done and which is superb.
However, I think it's important not to send hikers there only to have them come back disappointed.
Have a good evening
Christophe
