History and tags in the Bois de Charmes-la-Côte

This hike is located near the Côtes de Toul vineyards.
You will discover the old Fort de Charmes-la-Côte and many vestiges of the past.
Pretty tags created by a local graphic designer add to the charm of this hike.
The paths and trails are easy to follow and present no danger.
However, do not stray from the paths, as there are still many hazards in the undergrowth linked to the activity of the forts. Keep an eye on children and keep dogs on a leash.

Description of the walk

Departure from the commune of Domgermain, at a place called Champ d'Alouette
To get there, you will need to drive through the village of Domgermain on very steep and narrow streets.
When you leave the forest, the car park is immediately on your right.

This hike is not marked in its entirety, so please pay particular attention between points 1 and 5. The landmarks visible on the ground are included in this description to help you find your way (plot numbers).

(S/E) From the car park, head towards the beautiful open space by following the tarmac road, which quickly turns into a stony track. Go past the crossroads and continue straight ahead.

(1) Shortly after entering the forest, ignore the first path on the right and continue straight ahead. There are many paths, so follow the description carefully. Also follow the landmarks on the ground.

(2) Pass the first wide path on the left (not shown on the IGN map) and take the second one on the left. Pass the entrance to the quarry, with a barrier on the right, and continue along the same path.

(3) At a large T-junction, turn right and ignore the markings. A few metres further on, at a three-way junction, leave the wide path and take a smaller one to the left of plot no. 9.
After a slight bend, the path leads to a clear crossroads with four paths. Continue straight ahead between plots 38 and 39.

(4) At the next crossroads, continue straight ahead.

(5) When you reach the road, take it to the right for about 150 metres, then leave it to the left via a path between plots 15 and 16.
At a T-junction, at an octagonal marker, turn left and follow the yellow rectangle markings.
Continue straight ahead, walking alongside the forest on your left and cultivated fields on your right. Continue straight ahead until you reach a tarmac road.
Follow this road to the right for about 180 m, pass a first path on the right and continue to a large crossroads with a forest road.

Turn right onto a wide path marked with a yellow rectangle for about 300 metres, and you will see your first tag. Continue straight ahead for about 130 metres.

(6) Variation (see "Practical information").
If you are not taking the alternative route, leave this wide path (and the yellow rectangle markings) and take a path that climbs slightly to the right. Follow this path until you leave the forest and continue straight ahead between the fields until you reach a crossroads.

Turn left until you reach the forest, which you will cross straight ahead, ignoring any paths on the right or left.
The path leaves the forest, turning right, then briefly re-enters the forest before descending to the left between the forest and pastures, then quickly climbing back up to a wide stony path

(7) When you reach this stony path, follow it to the left until you come to a crossroads of forest roads.

(8) Turn left for a return trip of about 500 metres to discover a second tag in the forest on the left.
Once you have admired this beautiful tag, retrace your steps back to the crossroads.

(8) Take the path that descends steeply to the left. During this somewhat challenging descent, after a few steps, you will discover athird tag slightly recessed on the right.

At the bottom of the descent, take the wide forest path on the left, but not before admiring thefourth tag on your left, just at the junction of the two paths.
Continue down this wide forest path, then take the path on the left marked with a yellow rectangle.

(9) 100 metres further on, you will come to the "Le Sans Souci" open-air café.
Take the time to walk around it and discover the many tags on the wooden shelter and on the walls of the small building.

After this short break, turn your back on the guinguette and descend the path on the left to the road. Follow it to the left for a few metres, then take a wide path on the left again.
Continue along this path for 1 km straight ahead towards the village, ignoring the paths on the right.

(10) At the three-way junction, take the path on the right that descends towards the village. At the crossroads of Rue du Han and Rue du Progrès, go up to the left, then take Rue de Bellevue, pass in front of the church and the town hall, then turn left just before the playgrounds.
Climb up to the water tower, follow the path up into the forest, cross a crossroads and continue climbing opposite until you reach the forest road.

(11) When you reach the crossroads, take thesecond wide path (forest road) on the right for a few metres, then turn left and stay on this path to discover the Ouvrage de Charmes in the heart of the forest.
Be careful not to venture inside the buildings.
Retrace your steps back to the crossroads.

Take the path that turns sharply left and is marked with an X and two yellow horizontal bars.
Do not leave this path, which will take you back to the car park after about 1.5 km.

Along the way, take note of the various information panels explaining the fauna, flora and remains of the fort.
Take a particular look at a shelter on your left, which you can enter to see some explanatory photos of the site.
Also note the ventilation chimneys of the various tunnels dug at this location and a beautiful view of the Toulois plain and Mont Saint-Michel.

When you leave the forest, take the road on the left, which will take you directly back to the car park (S/E).

Notes

This route, which is largely in the forest, does not offer any water points.
Shelter is available at the open-air café at approximately km 7.

Alternative route: you can stay on this wide path, pass the second tag, until you reach the point (8) and then follow the path that descends rapidly to the left.
It is possible to shorten this route by about 1 km by going directly from (6) to (8) and staying on the forest road.

There are numerous paths between (1) and (5), so we recommend that you follow the description carefully.

The trails, paths and forest roads used are not dangerous.
The area around the old forts contains remnants of the past in some places, so it is strongly recommended that you never venture into the forest, supervise children and keep dogs on a leash.

Worth a visit

The villages of Mont-le-Vignoble, Charmes-la-Côte and Domgermain are well worth a visit. You will discover pretty streets lined with Lorraine barn doors, decorated with various mascarons, Lorraine thistles, wheel chases and other ox-eye motifs.
A little further afield, you can also visit the town of Toul, with its ramparts and cathedral, as well as the wine-growing villages of Lucey and Bruley.

A lovely walk, but with a few fairly steep hills (2), not to be attempted if the ground is wet
otherwise the paths are pleasant

Hello and thank you for your comments.
However, we would like to point out to future hikers on this route that shortening the route by going directly from point 6 to 9 means you will miss three tags, which are the theme of this hike.
Admittedly, in winter the soggy ground can be difficult to walk on, but we wanted to make this point clear.
Furthermore, you say in your comments that the route is "very interesting" but only give it a "Good" rating!

Thank you again and happy hiking!

A very interesting route with beautiful forest trails and truly original graffiti.
In winter, when the ground is wet, avoid the return route 6-7-8, which is not really interesting and almost impassable. It is better to go directly from point 6 to 9.

A beautiful hike, first across the lovely Domgermain plateau, then mainly through forest to Charmes la Côte, with magnificent trees between 9 and 10, followed by a very pleasant little balcony path between 11 and the finish. The graffiti is fun to discover and look at. The fort at Charmes la Côte and the structures surrounding it are spectacular. A beautiful place to visit again in different seasons to discover other aspects and landscapes.

A beautiful hike with varied landscapes between villages, hillsides, plateaus and, of course, graffiti. Follow the directions carefully, otherwise... I recommend using the Visorando app on your smartphone in addition to the map.

I also recommend doing this hike in spring before the deciduous trees are in full leaf, as the view from the hillside paths and through the trees over the villages is magnificent and it would be a shame to miss it.

Hello,
Following previous comments regarding the difficulty in finding certain paths, we have made some changes to the description to make it clearer and easier to follow.
Please note, however, that it is advisable to follow the description and landmarks on the ground, particularly the plot numbers.
We followed our hike based solely on the description and all the information is accurate and still present on the ground.

We hope you enjoy exploring!

Coming from Champ de l'Alouette, and after leaving the forest road to take the path on the left that passes in front of the old quarry, the path is difficult to find. Personally, I immediately took the quarry, the path on the right and then the one on the left to find myself on the path leading along the crops. Otherwise, no particular problems. I think it is also possible to take the left, then the right to access the path leading to the crops.

An interesting route, but modified to allow access from the village of Charmes-la-Côte. The frescoes are beautiful and well worth seeing.
A section where the path was difficult to find has also been bypassed.

A beautiful hike through very interesting woods, alternating between undergrowth and more pleasant forest with venerable beech and oak trees.
The tags are really worth seeing, especially – if I remember correctly – at (7) (a tribute to the film "La Soupe aux Choux") and at (8) on the little house "Le Sans Souci" (magnificent tags).
Preferably in good weather as the paths can be very muddy.
The plain where you can park, above Domgermain, is very windy...

A very pleasant hike that presents no difficulty. There are many variations along the route. It is a shame that the forest has been badly damaged by successive storms, exacerbated by logging...
The tags make it a fun route. I really recommend it.
