(S) Leave the Mandroze lodge early as it is a long stage. At the end of Rue de l’École, turn left into Rue du Général de Gaulle then right into Rue André Fontaine. The street turns sharply right and this is where you’ll find the sign marking the start of the trail.
(1) Take the path, known as Chemin de Bélouve, straight ahead and begin a steep climb. The slope remains very steep and offers views of Piton des Neiges, Hellbourg and Piton d’Anchain in the foreground. Continue climbing steeply to the Belvédère du Lodge de Bélouve.
(2) From this viewpoint, the view is spectacular. An orientation board helps you identify the main peaks, including Piton des Neiges. Cross the lodge’s esplanade, take the track to the right and then right again. Continue along this lovely track to a new viewpoint from where theGR®R1heads towards Piton des Neiges.
(3) Take this path which winds through lush vegetation in a very damp environment. There are many muddy and flooded sections, and the wooden walkways are often damaged. The path progresses slowly, sometimes uphill, sometimes downhill, as it crosses the entire Bélouve Forest.
Leave the Sentier de la Tamarinaie on your left and continue straight on, crossing numerous streams including the Bras de Caverne. Finally, as you emerge from the rainforest, the going becomes much easier. There are numerous wooden structures to protect the vegetation. The path continues to climb, though the gradient is fairly gentle, despite some steeper sections with a few small ladders, until you reach the junction with the Sentier du Cap Anglais.
(4) At Cap Anglais, two paths meet. Continue straight on towards Piton des Neiges. Pass in front of the Caverne Mussard, which is just a small cave, and continue climbing up the steeper path. There are some very beautiful views on both sides, with sections along the ledge. Keep climbing until you reach the Caverne Dufour lodge, which can be seen from a distance; this is the only place to spend the night (S/E).
