Grand tour of the Saou Forest

Head east to explore the tourist trail created by Maurice Burrus in 1930. The route passes at the foot of the Trois-Becs. To round off the walk, a descent along forest paths and tracks will make you forget the long climb.

The Saou Forest, acquired under the Sensitive Natural Areas policy, is the Department’s largest property. Listed as a protected site since 1942, it is managed according to the principles of sustainable development, in consultation with local stakeholders.

Description of the route

From Bourdeaux, take the D538 and park in Saou, in the car park next to the town hall.

Mountain bike route no. 5

(S/E) From Saou, head straight on the D136 towards the forest. At the first junction, turn right, then right again towards Château d’Eurre, without going there.

(1) At this junction, turn left towards Chantebise. Continue straight on at the first junction to reach a second one, on a bend.

(2) Follow the track to the left, then, at the next junction, leave it to go round the campsite on the right. Pass Pas de Lestang and come out onto the D70.

(3) Turn left to reach Le Pertuis.

(4) Keep to the right and follow the road, then turn left onto the greenway. Follow it to the wide track. Turn left to reach Les Abeilles.

(5) Follow the path to the right, towards Raillon. At the track, turn left to reach the Raillon bend and the ruins of the farm of the same name.

(6) Continue along the track to the “Chemin muletier” signpost (second track on the right).

(7) Continue straight on along the track to the Refuge des Girards.

(8) Stay on the track until you reach the Virage du Pré de l’Âne, located after the second stream.

(9) Continue along the track towards the Bergerie de Bois Vert.

(10) Begin the descent towards the Porte de Barry viewpoint.

(11) Continue the descent along the track on the right to the Refuge des Princes.

(12) Keep going straight ahead and, shortly afterwards, at the bend, take the path straight ahead towards Les Fourneaux. At the end of the path, cross the track to reach the Coupes track.

(13) Turn left and head towards Les Clos. Follow the Pont de Pézillet track, at the end of which you’ll take the first turn right then left. At the end of the descent, follow the stream on the left until you reach the bridge.

(14) Cross the road and follow the path to Le Pertuis, turning right onto the road. Continue to the bridge.

(4) Turn right and cross the bridge. At the D136, turn left, then left again until you reach the campsite entrance.

(15) Follow the track straight ahead (ignore the campsite access road) to Chantebise.

(2) Turn right, then straight on towards the castle.

(1) Follow the small road to the left past the old ball bearing factory, then turn right onto Rue de l'Oume, and right again to return to the car park (S/E).

All in all, this route has very little to offer apart from two or three scenic spots (notably at Pas de Siara); the climb is quite long, whilst the descent is rather pleasant, and the first few kilometres are on a single track that’s quite enjoyable to ride.

  • Follow the Red Route No. 5, which is signposted all the way along

A dull route: a long climb on a 4x4 track with few views. The descent is the same and monotonous.
Apart from the start on a short single track, this ride is of no interest.

Mostly wide forest tracks, apart from a short single track section towards the end. No difficulty
Worth doing to keep your cardio in shape, but a mountain bike ride of little interest apart from a detour to the Pas de la Laveuse for a beautiful view of the Rocher Troué with a view of Saillans
