Description of the route

Start and finish at Porte de France in Grenoble.

(S/E) Cycle up Quai de France for 100 metres towards the east to reach the start of the greenway.

(1) Isère right-bank cycle route: turn right to go downhill and pass under the Porte de France bridge. Follow the cycle route which runs alongside the River Isère downstream.

(2) Turn left to take the path over the Oxford cable-stayed bridge on the left-hand side of the road.
Isère Greenway, left bank: immediately after the bridge, take the hairpin bend to the left to head down towards the Isère. Turn left to go under the bridge. Pass in front of the rowing club’s jetty.

(3) After passing under the A480 bridge, ignore the path on the right leading to the shooting range. Leave the banks of the Isère. The track turns left and climbs up to the bridge over the Drac. Cross this bridge. Immediately after the bridge, take the hairpin bend to the right to descend towards the embankment.

(4) Drac Left Bank Greenway: turn right towards Gap and Sisteron. Follow this greenway as it runs upstream along the Drac on the embankment. The cycle path passes under all the bridges.

(5) Link: follow signs for Echirolles. Take the Rondeau footbridge. Once you’ve crossed the Drac, turn right, then take the cycle path which climbs as it turns left to pass over the A480.

(6) Towards the bottom of the descent, the cycle path runs to the right of Di Meglio Ital Sport. Cross two small streets. When you reach the D1075, a dual carriageway, turn right to follow the cycle path along the service road.

(7) D269: at the Speedy junction, turn left towards Echirolles centre to join Avenue d’Honhoué, the start of the D269, which you’ll follow for several kilometres, continuing straight on. It becomes Avenue Grangliasco. For a stretch of a few hundred metres, the cycle path is simply the right-hand verge of the road, alongside the cars. It even disappears for a while. Carry on straight ahead.

(8) From the junction with Rue Fernand Pelloutier (towards the swimming pool), the cycle path re-emerges clearly on the pavement on the left-hand side of Avenue Grangliasco (D269), which you follow, crossing various avenues and streets. Follow the signs successively for Hôpital Sud, Eybens, Poisat and La Galochère. The cycle path remains on the left-hand side of the D269 for a long stretch, which is successively named: Avenue de Kimberley, Rue Mendès France, Avenue de Poisat, Avenue d’Eybens and Avenue Jacques Prévert. The cycle path becomes intermittent, then moves to the right-hand side of the D269, before disappearing into Avenue de la Galochère.

(9) At the traffic lights, turn right towards Gières to continue along the D269, which becomes Avenue Jean Jaurès and then Rue du Docteur Valois. The D269 passes under the bridge on the road to Saint-Martin d’Uriage and ends at a roundabout.

(10) D523: at the roundabout, take the D523 towards Gières centre. The D523 is called Grande Rue, then Rue Jean Jaurès, then Rue de la Libération.

(11) Isère Left Bank Greenway: turn left to cross the level crossing. Turn left towards Grenoble to follow the cycle path on the embankment on the left bank of the Isère towards Grenoble, in the direction of the river’s flow. This greenway passes under all the bridges, meaning you won’t encounter any cars until you reach the Ile Verte district in Grenoble.

(12) Saint-Laurent district and right-bank quays: turn right to cross the bridge to Porte Saint-Laurent. Continue straight ahead at the traffic lights to enter the Saint-Laurent district. Turn left to follow the Saint-Laurent pedestrian street. Take Quai Perrière and Quai de France to return to the starting point (S/E).

A really good walk, well signposted according to my GPS.
Just a few minor inaccuracies here and there, but if you’re not too daft, you’ll soon spot where the path is.

In any case, brilliant!

Precise, easy, enjoyable, not too busy.

I’d recommend it.

It’s a lovely ‘urban-industrial’ walk that lets you see the whole conurbation in a different light. It took me 2 hours 30 minutes rather than 2 hours, but it wasn’t at all difficult and most of the route was on cycle paths, apart from about 1 km towards Gières, which was safe enough. Ideal for getting fit.
