Description of the walk

From Embrun, take the N94, then the D568 to reach the La Fontaine de l'Ours car park (1550m). Note that the end of the route is on a narrow but very passable road.

(S/E) From the La Fontaine de l'Ours car park, take the Pyramides trail, which starts at the back of the car park.

(1) 500m after the car park, pass the Belvédère de l'Aiguillas viewpoint.

(2) Pass the Belvédère des Pyramides viewpoint just before the stream. You are now on a wooded and relatively flat path that descends to the Colombier stream, which you must cross. Continue along the wooded path on the side of the mountain, which alternates between ascents and descents. Further on, the path widens and leads to a stony road (be careful, as some cars use it to reach the Grand Clot car park). At this intersection, take the road on the left (no markings). A few hundred metres further on, leave theGRP® Tour du Lac de Serre Ponçon on your right and continue to the Grand Clot car park (1660m).

(3) Cross the car park and take the ascending path. It is made up of hairpin bends (it is possible but not advisable to take the numerous shortcuts that join the main path). The climb is mainly through forest. A few dozen metres after passing a path descending to the right, the Morgon cirque appears at a place called Les Portes de Morgon.

(4) Turn left and take the path that descends very slightly to the right towards Pic de Morgon. Continue along the plateau until you reach a sheepfold and a watering hole. Behind it, the slope becomes steeper. Continue climbing the dirt and stone path to reach Pic de Morgon, which offers a magnificent 360° view.

(5) Take the path following the ridges towards the south-east. Be careful at two slightly vertiginous passages where you will need to use your hands (on the second passage, make sure you walk on the top of the ridge and not underneath, as it is quite dangerous). Continue to the crossroads with a path.

(6) Turn left to descend into the Cirque de Morgon towards a small lake. At the bottom of the Cirque de Morgon, at the first few larch trees, leave the path on the left and continue straight on towards the lake. Go around the lake (dry in August 2016), keeping it on your right, until you reach a crossroads above it.

(7) Continue straight ahead up the slope to an altitude of 2,035 metres. Turn right at the crossroads and arrive at the Col de la Baisse.

(8) Continue along the Charance trail on the left, leaving the trail to Pic de Charence on your right. Climb up to Col de Charance. From the pass, descend (mainly through woods) to the La Fontaine de l'Ours car park (S/E).

Notes

Both trails (Pyramide and Charance) are very quiet. It is absolutely peaceful.
The only water source is the trough located in the Cirque du Morgon, near the sheepfold.
This hike is classified as difficult due to two slightly challenging sections on the ridge and some slippery descents.
Allow 3 hours for the climb to Pic de Morgon and 2½ hours for the return to the car park.

(8) It should be noted that in this area, some of the hairpin bends offer beautiful views of the mountains, but these become dizzying as you get closer.
Also note that from the Col de Charance to the car park, the trail is marked with large orange circles.

Worth a visit

A very interesting route as it is not very busy for most of the way (before the Le Grand Clot car park and after passing by the mountain lake).
Magnificent panoramic views!

Perfect description, varied hike, beautiful views; only downside: the lady's slippers are barely in bud!

A beautiful route with no technical sections. An exceptional panorama at the summit with a superb orientation table, allowing you to clearly see the main mountains of the Ecrins, Queyras, Mercantour, Ubaye, Devoluy and Champsaur ranges, as well as Mont Ventoux.
Thank you for this route.
However, please note that the trail has been modified from point 4 onwards, probably due to the presence of shepherds and Patou dogs, so that everyone can continue their activities without any worries.
Thank you for this beautiful route.

Hello,
You will certainly meet many hikers at the peak.
But starting from this car park and following the marked trails will give you the impression at times that you are away from the crowds, or even alone in the world.
The hike is superb, and the site is magnificent.

Hike completed in early August 2019.
A pure delight, with diverse landscapes and breathtaking views at the summit...
Just a heads up, I climbed to the peak of Morgon via the south trail, and at the summit, there are a few sections where you need to use your hands to complete the hike to the peak... It didn't bother me at all, but I'm mentioning it for those who might be climbing with very young children. It's nothing too serious, but it might be intimidating for some.
