The Pic de Morgon from the Fontaine de l'Ours

A beautiful, challenging circular walk for those who want to explore the Morgon cirque and experience one of the finest views of Lake Serre-Ponçon and the surrounding peaks.
Autumn, with its vibrant colours, is the best time of year to visit.

Description of the walk

Access to the Fontaine de l’Ours car park (visible on the return path) is from Savines-le-Lac or Embrun. Leave the N94 main road and head towards Boscodon Abbey via the D568. When you reach the abbey, continue slightly uphill to your right towards a car park. Once you reach the car park, turn sharply left and continue to the next car park at the end of the road.

(S/E) From the car park, look out for the Charance path, which is also, at the start, a nature trail (with information boards about the local wildlife).

(1) Carry on straight ahead, leaving the nature trail to continue to the left. Climb in a zigzag pattern along the edge of the Bragousse cirque, which is constantly changing due to erosion caused by the Bragousse torrent. Reach the Col de la Baïsse.

(2) Enter the Morgon cirque. Change paths by turning left to go round the small lake below, which is often dry.

(3) Go round the hillock topped by a cross on the right. Climb approximately 250 metres in altitude to reach the ridge.

(4) Continue along the ridge, heading north-north-west, to reach the summit of the Pic de Morgon at an altitude of 2,324 metres. The colours of the rock in this section are remarkable. From the summit, the view is breathtaking, both towards Embrun and towards the arm of the lake leading towards the Ubaye.

(5) Begin the descent, initially continuing along the ridge, then the path leaves the ridge to the right. You’ll reach a fork.

(6) Turn left onto the fairly steep path. Go round a rocky spur (elevation 2103) on the left and continue along it until you reach the junction with a track at Les Portes de Morgon.

(7) Heading towards the cross, continue along the forest track and head north-east to reach the Grand Clot car park.

(8) Leave the forest track. Take the path that runs past the bench, continuing on from the track. This will take you down to the GR® de Pays du Tour du Lac de Serre-Ponçon trail.

(9) Turn right, heading due south, onto this path known as the ‘Pyramides’. Perhaps because of the few slender, pointed rocks that can be seen from this path. Continue along it, stopping occasionally where the view is unobstructed, such as at the Belvédère de l’Aiguillas, which you’ll reach further on.

(10) Carry on, passing the Fontaine de l’Ours before returning to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Good high-top boots with lugged soles and walking poles are essential for safety and comfort.
Don’t forget to take plenty of water with you, as, to my knowledge, the only water source is near the sheepfold.

Worth a visit

From the summit of Pic de Morgon, apart from the views of the lake and the dam, the 360° views of the surrounding mountains are well worth taking a moment to appreciate.
There are a few truly remarkable peaks, all more or less easily accessible, but that’s for another day:
- Mont Guillaume (2,542 m) above Embrun,
- Le Mourre Froid (2,993 m), due north in the distance, the highest peak in the Embrun region,
- Les Aiguilles de Chabrières (2,403 m) above the resort of Réallon,
- Dormillouse (2,505 m), due south in the distance,
- La Tête de la Vieille (2,381 m) and the Pic de Charance (2,316 m) on the ridge of the Cirque de Morgon,
- Le Pouzenc (2,898 m) to the east, with the Lauzet ridge to its left.
A visit to the beautifully restored Romanesque Boscodon Abbey is highly recommended, but given that the day’s hike has already been a long one, we’ll certainly have to come back another time.

Thank you, Kristie, for this information. I’ve just updated the entry accordingly to avoid the route via the sheepfold, which is no longer possible.

A superb circular route and a magnificent hike: the views are breathtaking along almost the entire route, with remarkable panoramic views from the ridge and the peak. I would have happily given it two or three more stars for the route’s appeal.
The hike took 6½ hours, including a lunch break and photo stops, in ideal conditions: sunshine, blue skies, not too hot and not too crowded. No particular difficulties for any keen walker.
Lots of flowers in the mountain pastures at this time of year, and the little lake isn’t dry and has a beautiful emerald green colour.

/!\ The route is no longer up to date. In particular, there is a new path between points 5 and 7: you no longer pass near the sheepfold or the grazing areas; consequently, you no longer pass the indicated water source (I didn’t see any others, though the information board for the new path indicates the Deillières spring, presumably at point 7).
The route remains largely the same and is signposted along almost the entire route (except between points 8 and 9: a very steep downhill path), with signs at every junction.

The road, whilst certainly not very wide, is tarmac-surfaced all the way to the Fontaine de l’Ours car park and is therefore easily accessible by any vehicle. The car park now costs €5 during the peak season (this was not the case in early June).

Very beautiful hike, but the trail is no longer up to date. In fact, at the peak, all the paths have been redone and differ significantly from the trail and the IGN map. The trail would need to be redone using the actual new path, because otherwise, you end up going "off-trail" in an attempt to stay on the trail...

Hello,
I consulted this page because I was looking for a description of a circular route starting from Boscodon Abbey to Fontaine de l'Ours, which cannot be found on Visorando.
I recommend this circular walk starting from Boscodon, which is entirely in the forest, very pleasant in hot weather, very well signposted and of moderate difficulty.

Great route. Well marked. Lots of possible variations between the Fontaine de l'Ours, Boscodon Abbey and the Grand Clot car park. Superb views, varied terrain. Highly recommended and a must-do when you're in the area.

Thank you for this superb route.
The landscapes are sublime and varied.
There is a short section along the ridge where those prone to vertigo may find it challenging, but it is nothing insurmountable for others.

A beautiful, varied hike with lots of marmots. The Pyramids Trail is a bit long towards the end, with lots of ascents and descents.

A very beautiful hike for those who want to avoid the tourist route. The only slight downside is that the return via the Pyramids Trail is a bit long for the end of a hike, but if you're prepared for that, everything will be perfect.
Also worth noting is the dangerous passage along the ridges.
In any case, the different landscapes and views are all magnificent.

Wonderful landscapes despite the heat, thankfully there's the lake to cool off in.
