Description of the walk

You can park at the end of Rue du Vieux Pont, on the towpath. This is the starting point for this walk.

(S/E) Head eastwards, following the flow of the channelled River Scarpe, and carry on until you reach the first lock.

(1) When you reach Brebières, take the footbridge on the left, before the lock. Cross the Scarpe via a second footbridge. Walk along the edge of the park until you reach the roundabout.

(2) Enter the park, walk round it, leave and return to the footbridge. Cross over and turn left downstream from the lock.

(3) Turn right into Rue des Mottes and follow it to the top. Turn right onto Rue du Général de Gaulle. At the entrance to the farm, turn right onto the dirt track (Chemin de la Haute Tenue), which leads to the first footbridge you come to.

(1) Follow the same route back along the towpath to return to the starting point (A/D).

Notes

The towpath is particularly shaded, making it pleasant when the sun is out. The ground is flat, but some sections (the footbridges) can be difficult with a pushchair. Otherwise, the route is very easy.

A very good circular route along the Scarpe – best done when the weather’s a bit mixed, as it’s flat with not much of a ‘bump underfoot’.

We had a bit of trouble finding the entrance along the little path coming from Brebieres. The path was blocked on the right bank, so we had to find a way through on the left bank; otherwise, it’s very picturesque.
