Around the Saudemont marsh

A leisurely walk of less than two hours on flat terrain in a natural, sparsely built-up environment.
It partly follows the route of another walk I really like, but in the opposite direction, which offers a different perspective: Hamel and its marshes, a little piece of Canada

Description of the walk

Park in the small shaded car park on the outskirts of Lécluse as you head towards Hamel.

(S/E) Head straight on along the continuation of Rue du Marais onto a wide path. This path follows theGR®121trail, marked in red and white. You’ll reach the entrance to the village of Les Marais.

(1) Continue straight on through the residential area, staying on the quiet road. You’ll reach the junction of theGR® and PR® trails.

(2) Turn right onto the road that slopes gently downwards – this is still theGR®121– and enter the woods. Continue, ignoring the junction leading to a footbridge, until you reach a second footbridge over the stream connecting the two marshes.

(3) Turn right onto the small path that branches off at a right angle. There is a signpost with a red and white mark and, below it, a yellow mark 116658. Immediately after crossing the metal footbridge, turn right to follow the stream.
When you reach the small car park, turn left onto the stony path – this is aPR® marked in yellow – then right onto the tarmac road. At the next junction, leave thePR® and head towards the Auberge Rouge.

(4) Continue straight on. Once past the houses, the road becomes a track, then a path, leading to the village of Lécluse.

(5) At the houses, turn right onto the path that runs alongside the village. Turn right in front of the pumping station; do not go straight on, but turn left onto the path that runs alongside the gardens and then enters the woods to reach the car park on Rue du Marais (S/E).

Notes

There are sections with no shade. Bring a hat in case of strong sunshine.
Birdwatchers will be delighted – don’t forget your binoculars and cameras.

Worth a visit

This walk offers the chance to discover numerous bungalow-style homes with their gardens, some more decorated than others. They are typical of these northern marshes that flood the Sensée Valley.

(4) At the Auberge Rouge, you can walk past the campsite to get closer to the marsh on your right and/or continue straight ahead, following the marsh.

A pleasant, easy, flat walk – not very busy and peaceful. Watch out for the numerous, voracious mosquitoes

Overall, it was good. It’s a shame you can’t walk closer to the lakeside.
Route description: lacks detail at the very end of the route.

Why not? In any case, thanks for sharing this lovely experience. Since the start of 2021, I think this has been the most beautiful walk we’ve been on. We might head to the Platier d’Oye near Hardelot this weekend. If you like slag heaps, I’d recommend the Terril du Bois des Dames in Gosnay if you haven’t been there already (near Bruay-la-Buissière). It’s a complete change of scenery when you reach the top, with a slight feeling of being in the crater of a volcano (relatively speaking, of course).

Thanks for your message. Actually, when I did this walk for the first time, I really wanted to share it.
As for the last quarter, it’s clear you have to head back to the cars and the scenery isn’t necessarily the best. But it’s shorter than retracing three-quarters of the route in reverse , though not impossible...
Perhaps we’ll bump into each other one day between a slag heap and a marsh!

A lovely walk for the first three quarters of the route; the last quarter isn’t quite as good, though it’s by no means a deal-breaker.

The walk is definitely worth it; the wooded landscapes along the water’s edge are magnificent. Thank you for sharing this lovely experience.

A lovely little walk, surrounded by nature.
The paths are muddy, so make sure you wear wellies and good walking shoes.
Access is straightforward; you need to follow the route on the app carefully as there aren’t many signposts, but it’s easy.
Likewise, there are no difficulties during the walk.

Top.

Hello,
I’m not very good at using HTML tags, I’m afraid. That’s why I took a photo – number 4, if I remember correctly – to show that you mustn’t miss the turn-off. But it’s not easy to see my comment.

Actually, the round trip through the Marias is pleasant, but it does take longer :-).

All the best.

The accuracy of the route description and signposting needs reviewing from marker 3 onwards.

This results in a return trip to Palluel. Nice, but not planned at the start.

Otherwise, a good hike.

Luckily we had the route description and map, because unfortunately there are no yellow markings on this walk and we would have quickly got lost in the marshes. We didn’t even see a single sign saying ‘Around the Saudemont Marshes’. Thanks for the advice about headgear, as nearly three-quarters of the walk is in full sun. The first part of the walk is more interesting than the second, with more variety in the landscape. A pleasant and easy walk nonetheless.
