Between the Meuse and Lesse rivers in Anseremme

This long circular route takes you on a journey of discovery along the Meuse and Lesse rivers in one of the most beautiful parts of their course, with impressive rocks and splendid castles. Mainly wooded but also a little rural on the heights of Falmignoul, it does not present any major difficulties and is ideal for families.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Starting from the church in Anseremme, the walk follows the right bank of the Meuse for 6 km, passing a superb priory, the Anseremme marina and the famous rocks of Freÿr.
(1) Opposite these, on the other bank, you can admire the beautiful castle of the same name.

(2) At Waulsort, near the ferryman's house, the route turns and climbs through the forest and countryside towards the village of Falmignoul, which it reaches after a long circular route, partly along a ledge overlooking the Meuse valley.
(3) Only a few kilometres separate Falmignoul from the exceptional site of Walzin Castle on the banks of the Lesse.
(4) The return to Anseremme follows this iconic Walloon river, first from a little further away and then really close by.

(5) Bridge over the Lesse.

Notes

The starting point (S/E) can be easily reached by car (large car park), bus (stop in front of the church) or train (station nearby).
The only difficulty encountered is a fairly short but very narrow passage between the Meuse and a rock (1). In the event of flooding, you will need to take the GR® trail that climbs up the foot of the Rochers de Freÿr to get around the obstacle.
There are quite a few benches along the route as well as three picnic tables: one near the Walcourt ferry (2) and two others between km 11 and 12 on the outskirts of Falmignoul (3).
Those who dislike tarmac should note that there are paved paths for about 1 km on the outskirts of Falmignoul (3) and two others in Pont-à-Lesse (6) after crossing the Lesse on the footbridge near Walzin Castle (4).
This walk is strongly discouraged during the high season due to the noise generated by the numerous hordes of very noisy kayakers on the Lesse.

Worth a visit

In the high season (May to September), in Waulsort: the last remaining ferryman on the Meuse in Wallonia. Free service for pedestrians and cyclists only.
Nearby: Dinant town centre, its citadel and its funicular railway.
