Parking available at the Millénaire Sud car park, Rue des Oiseaux (free parking).
(S/E) From the car park, walk past the nursery school on your right, then turn left towards Eguisheim centre; further on, turn right onto Rue de Bruxelles.
When you reach Place du Général De Gaulle, turn right following the Blue Cross signs, walk past the primary school on your right, then past the fountain on your left to continue along Rue Porte Haute.
(1) On leaving the village, turn right following the Blue Cross signposting towards Hagueneck Castle (do not continue straight on via the Blue Diamond).
Continue to follow the Blue Cross signs as the path winds through the vineyard until you reach a junction near the edge of the forest.
(2) Take the road on the right heading straight down northwards, following the Green Ring markings, with the forest on your left (ignore the Blue Cross markings opposite, which lead directly to Hagueneck Castle; further down, follow the Green Ring to the right and head to the next crossroads.
(3) Leave the road and take a path on the left that climbs through the forest (no entry sign), marked with the Blue Cross. Turn left at the next junction, following the Green Ring signs towards Hagueneck (ignore the path on the right marked with the Green Ring towards Wettolsheim). You will reach a road.
(4) Turn right to follow the road uphill, take three hairpin bends and arrive at a car park (see ‘Sentier Herzog’ sign). Continue along the road opposite Hagueneck Castle, then follow a path to the right, marked with a Red Diamond. Look out for the information sign for Hagueneck Castle
(5) Walk to the well-restored castle and back, where a secure metal staircase allows you to climb to the top of the tower to enjoy the surrounding views.
After visiting the castle, retrace your steps back to the sign (do not follow the Red Diamond markings, which lead directly to the Trois Châteaux). Then take the path furthest to the left, marked with a Blue Cross, towards Le Repos des Chasseurs.
The path then climbs steadily in switchbacks until it reaches a junction marked with a sign bearing a drawing of a horse-drawn carriage (Herzog trail).
(6) Follow the Yellow Disc markings towards the 3 Châteaux (leaving the Blue Cross behind you) along a wide, level path. It eventually heads south-west on a gentle descent and reaches a junction with an information sign for "Le hêtre et le pic noir".
(7) Continue straight downhill following the Yellow Disc markings (ignore the sign for Hohlandsbourg on the right). At the sign for “The Fir Tree and the Deer”, continue straight on. About 200 m after a sharp left-hand bend, you’ll reach the start of a path on the right.
(8) Leave the path and take this trail (still following the Yellow Discs towards the 3 châteaux). After a bend to the right, it joins a path coming from the right and leads to a large open space with a car park.
(9) Cross the car park to reach the “Sentier des Carrières” information sign. Take the path leading to the Trois Châteaux. About 100 m further on, turn left onto the path (Yellow Disc). Enter the site of the 3 châteaux, enjoying once again a beautiful view of the surrounding Alsace plain and Colmar.
(10) Leave the castle site and head right downhill, following the Red Disc markings towards Husseren Les Châteaux. Walk down to a bench (known as Herren Sessel), then continue along the winding path (Red Disc) to another bench further down (known as Damen Sessel).
(11) Follow the Red Disc signposted path to the left towards Hagueneck, heading north. Cross a forest track.
(12) Leave the Red Disc markings and follow the Red Diamond markings, continuing down the path towards Hagueneck. Cross a forest track twice more and continue downhill, following the markings.
You will arrive at the bottom of a small valley at a place called Bechtal (small wooden bridge).
(13) Do not cross the stream but turn right and continue to follow the Blue Diamond markings. Further on, the marked path turns left again.
As you leave the forest, stay on the path through the vineyards (the markings become less visible).
After a cross (dated 1732), head down to the right, facing the village, until you rejoin the route taken at the start.
(1) Walk back down Rue Porte Haute.
Enter the old town for a visit (notably the "La ronde d'Eguisheim" discovery trail)
Head back along Rue de l'Hôpital to return to the car park (S/E).
