Description of the walk

The start is at thefirst car park on the right, north of Hohlandsbourg Castle, coming from Wintzenheim via the Route des Cinq Château.

(S/E) Once in the car park, head north-east, cross the Route des Cinq Château and take the forest path marked with a Green Cross (Croix Verte) downhill opposite.

(1) After about a hundred metres, at a fork, leave the marked path and turn right towards Hohlandsbourg. After a long right-hand bend and a slight climb, when the path meets the Red Cross-marked trail, turn right uphill onto the track and continue for about 200 m. At the junction of two tracks, take the one on the right for 50 m.

(2) At the next junction, continue to the right, still climbing, along a Red Cross-marked path which narrows, turns left and climbs steeply towards the access road to the castle. Join the Route des Cinq Châteaux, cross it and head left towards the car park.

(3) Leave the access road to the castle, cross the car park (west) and find a path leading downhill. Follow it along the slope below the castle. After a long bend to the right, it turns into a forest track, still unmarked.
Continue along this track even though it is no longer clearly marked on the map.

(4) Ignore a steeply descending path on the left and continue along the forest track for about 150 m. Begin a descent, cross the Lazare de Schwendi path and follow it to the right to reach the car park (S/E).

A short route around the castle, but not really suitable for children.
Some parts aren’t really visible.

Update of the description and route to bring them into line with the base maps.

I was thinking about the title: it’s Hohlandsbourg.

I’ve noticed there are very often typos in the names of places in Alsace. Here’s a tip to avoid making mistakes: copy it letter by letter

It’s true, it’s not suitable for pushchairs. But it might be suitable for children who like walking, as there’s a destination: the castle.

It’s not a family walk as described, as there’s quite a significant elevation gain. It goes up and down steeply at times. It’s not difficult, but it’s not suitable for a pushchair, for example.

We got lost after the checkpoint (2). There are no signposts at either the start or the end of the route. There are three car parks; it should be made clear which one to use. The start of the route (3) is non-existent; there is a lack of information on how to continue.

This is a circular walk through the forest; do make a detour to the castle (1–2 km there and back) – it’s open to visitors.

Please note: whilst the first part of the walk is easy, the second part (a narrow, unmarked path that is steep and slippery in places) is not suitable for children.
