Description of the walk

Starting point: car park behind Edern church, Place Jean-Edern Hallier.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, cross the road, go around the town hall (note the old well) and follow Route de Kerganaval on the right.

(1) Turn right onto the first street, which continues onto a grassy path. At the end, continue onto a paved road until you reach another road.

(2) At the crossroads, leave Ménez-Edern (antenna) on your left and pass Croas Bénodic. Ignore the road to Kerestou, pass a beautiful calvary and arrive at a fork at Kroaz ar C'huré.

(3) Turn left and follow the road that leads to the hamlet of Goadré. Turn left downhill, arrive at a crossroads where a cross serves as a roundabout and continue to the next road.

(4) Turn right and follow the small road that descends into the valley and then climbs back up.

(5) At the three-way junction, turn right towards Roc'htourment, pass the hamlet and continue until you reach a path on the right.

(6) Turn off between the meadows and continue along the edge of a field, keeping to the authorised path without encroaching on the cultivated area. At the signpost, turn left and follow the wide path between the fields to reach the road, which you should follow to the left for about 100 metres. Turn right towards Park an Oac'h Ru and, at the farm entrance, turn right to descend to the site with a fountain, a wash house and a mill (see Practical Information).

(7) Retrace your steps, turn right at the road, cross a road and continue to a gravel path on the left, which descends towards the hamlet of Landivigen where you will find the Saint-Symphorien Chapel: an ideal place for a short break. Near the chapel is a monolithic stele.

(8) With your back to the chapel, join the road that descends to the left into the valley and return to the crossroads you passed on the way there.

(5) Continue straight ahead along the same route you took on the way there.

(4) At the crossroads with the cross that serves as a roundabout, turn right towards Saint-Maudez.

(9) In this hamlet, on the right, there is a damaged calvary, the only remnant of a former 15th-century abbey. Also note the house on the right, which was a former presbytery with its sundial and a statue on the gable (Saint-Maudez?). Descend along a wide path to a newly restored fountain.

(10) Walk back up to the road

(9) Turn right, pass Langelin and continue to the next crossroads.

(11) Follow the road to the left, cross Langelin again and pass the entrance to a house (letterbox on the left).

(12) Immediately afterwards, turn left onto a wide path lined with trees on the right, which runs alongside a field, then turns right and left. Go around a residential area on the left, walk along a tree plantation on the right and arrive at a road. Follow this road to the right for about 50 metres.

(13) At the recycling bins, turn right into a housing estate, then turn left and join a sunken lane. Go down it to the right and you will come out onto the main street of Edern, Grand Rue. Turn left and follow it for 50 metres.

(14) Turn left onto a street leading to Cité L'Haridon, pass behind Saint-Joseph Primary School and you will arrive at the starting point. Turn right, go around the town hall and you will arrive at the church car park opposite (S/E).

Notes

This route is best done in winter to avoid the trails, which can be muddy at other times of year.

Toilets and book box near the town hall.

Worth a visit

18th-century wickerwork workshop.
The wicker, cut between November and March, was bundled and placed in a wicker-soaking vat in 15 to 20 cm of water until May (when the sap rises) to be "peeled" and become white wicker.
The wicker was then dried and bundled again. It was left for a few months before being used.
Restored by the Edern History and Heritage Association, which works to promote the rich heritage of the commune of Edern.

Saint-Symphorien Chapel.

Saint-Maudez Calvary.

Saint-Maudez Fountain.

In the commune of Edern, you can visit six chapels, often located in very pleasant green settings.

Very good route!
I recommend it for walkers and runners.
Approximately 95% of the route is paved.
Be careful if you're out with your family because of the traffic.
A wonderful way to discover the Edernoise countryside.
Thank you.

Please note that the starting point, Rue du Couvent, has been renamed Rue de Kerganaval.
Between 2 and 3, just after crossing the stream and before turning right towards Roc'htourment, it is not uncommon to see deer in the meadow below on the left.
Between 6 and 7, there is a very nice picnic spot on the right, beside the stream.
Overall, a lovely, easy country walk.
