Description of the walk

(S) From the Wallon refuge (1,865 m), head due east.

(1) Cross a footbridge 500 m from the refuge. Head south and follow a path marked with cairns. At around 2,028 m, turn left at the ruins of some huts.

(2) Arrive at Lac d'Aratille (2,247 m) and go around it on the right. Continue climbing due south; there may still be snow around 2,363 m in the scree. The path climbs steeply towards Lac du Col d'Arratille (2,501 m).

(3) Arrive at Col d'Arratille (2528 m). You are now on the France-Spain border. Descend slightly towards south-southeast Spain. Then head north-northeast. The path remains level, describing a wide curve in this very mineral landscape, heading towards the pass.

(4) Arrive at Col des Mulets (altitude 2,591 m). You will be treated to a splendid view on both sides of the border.
The path returns to France, heading due east. It descends towards the Refuge des Oulettes de Gaube. There is a spring on the descent where you can fill your water bottles.

(5) Arrive at the Refuge des Oulettes de Gaube (2,151 metres). This is a place where you can take a short break and quench your thirst. The view is spectacular. View of the famous Gaube couloir leading to Vignemal. Remember to keep going. It's a long day's walk.
Descend via theGR®10 heading due north.

(6) You will arrive at the end of Lac de Gaube (1,731 m) by going around it on the left. At the end of the lake, turn right and then left. Do not follow the flat path. There is also a hotel on the other side of the lake.
Follow theGR®10 on the right bank of the Gave de Gaube.

(7) Pass near Lac des Huats (666 m).

(8) Arrive at Pont d'Espagne. Cross the bridge over the Gave du Marcadeau. Turn right onto a paved path that descends and follow theGR®10. Follow the waterfall trail: Cascade de Boussès, Cascade du Pas de l'Ours, Cascade de Pouey Bacou, Cascade du Ceriset, Cascade d'Escane Gat. Pass above the Griffons spa.

(9) Arrive at the La Raillère car park (1048 m). Turn left and follow the road. A paved path allows you to avoid some of the road. Your cars will be waiting for you 250 m further along the D920 towards Cauterets (altitude 1042) (E).

Notes

Information about refuges: the refuges in the Hautes-Pyrénées are generally open from mid-June to mid-September.
There is a spring on the descent from the Col des Mulets towards the Oulettes de Gaube refuge.
You are in the high mountain area of the Hautes Pyrénées, so respect and mandatory equipment are required. I therefore recommend: good MID shoes, at least 2 litres of water, warm clothing, rain gear, the GPX route, a map, a compass, and mountain bivouac equipment, if necessary. The weather can change very quickly during July and August.
You can also stay at the Gaube refuge (5).

A very hot day. A beautiful but very long hike. The descent seemed endless, but fortunately we were able to stop for lunch and a nap at the Oulettes de Gaube refuge. We saved a bit of time by leaving a car at Pont d'Espagne.

Hike from the Wallon refuge to the Pont d'Espagne car park in 7½ hours... Quite a long hike, then.
Best done when there is no snow.
Lots of people between the Oulettes de Gaube and Pont d'Espagne on a weekend in September.

It's simply magnificent, but it's worth it
I was inspired by this route for the first part of our hike to the Wallon refuge, where we then headed towards Lake Pourtet. Wonderful atmosphere and scenery from start to finish.
Thank you for this information sheet!

Enjoy your hike!

I was inspired by this route, but in a circular loop around the Pont d'Espagne.
The route is 25 km long, with an elevation gain of 1,300 m, and takes 9 hours to complete.
For me, the most beautiful parts are Lake Aratille and the view behind you during the entire climb up to the pass, then Lake Gaube and, of course, the waterfalls.
You can't see much from the two passes because the nearby hills block the view of the mountain ranges in the distance, except towards Lake Aratille.
Your route does not always follow the GR, with interesting alternatives that you describe well.
But I preferred the cairned path that sticks to the IGN map
Except between the two passes, your route is much higher and more dangerous than the path, which is fortunately clearly visible and corresponds to the route on the IGN map.
Thank you for this route.

The climb up the Gaube Valley to the Oulettes refuge is very beautiful, as is the descent to the Wallon refuge from the lake at the Col d'Arratille. Between the two, the passage between the Col des Mulets and the Col d'Arratille (not very long) is of no interest. From Wallon to Marcadau, it is beautiful and long.

The mule pass is still as tough as ever.
The cross-country route is long.
