Park your vehicle in the Pont d'Espagne car park.
(S/E) Continue to the Pont d'Espagne.
(1) Cross the bridge and follow the right bank of the Gave de Cauterets. Shortly after the Gaube chairlift departure station, cross the bridge and turn right. Stay on the right bank for 1 km. The path is still fairly flat and allows you to warm up a little. The rest of the route is much more difficult.
(2) Cross the bridge and pass the Refuge du Clot chalet.
(3) Turn left and follow the Plateau du Clot to the Pont du Cayan bridge.
(4) At the Pont du Cayan bridge, turn right and follow a path towards the Lacs de l'Embarrat, where the slope quickly becomes steeper. This is the most difficult part of the hike, especially if the sun is beating down. After a little over 200 m of elevation gain, you will emerge from the forest and begin to enjoy the view.
(5) You will then reach the Lacs de l'Embarrat (two lakes at 2,078 m and 2,139 m above sea level), leaving a path on your right.
Continue climbing, following the trail to Lac du Pourtet, 300 m higher up at an altitude of 2,420 m. The landscape then becomes very rocky.
(6) From Lac du Pourtet, the trail leads to Lac de Nère.
(7) At 2,309 m, in a maze of rocks of various sizes, after a small pass just above Lac du Pourtet. From here, enjoy the view, especially towards Vignemale.
Then begin the descent. Between the lake and the left bank of various mountain streams, you will pass three trails on your right and the Wallon-Marcadau refuge.
(8) The descent is almost entirely outside the forest.
Reach the Pont d'Espagne by following the Gave du Marcadau, first on its left bank, then on its right bank via the Pont d'Estalounqué.
(9). Continue to the Pont du Cayan.
(4). After the Pont du Cayan bridge, which you will leave on your left, the path becomes passable by car. Continue along this path.
(2) Continue straight ahead and, taking the same route as on the way there, reach the car park (S/E).
