Park your car in the Pont d’Espagne car park at an altitude of 1,460 metres.
(S/E) Start by taking the road that winds its way uphill.
(1) Turn left shortly afterwards towards Lac de Gaube. This is also the route ofthe GR®®10, which you’ll follow as far as the Refuge des Oulettes de Gaube. The path is quite steep at first, then the gradient eases off.
(2) Pass by Lac des Huats at an altitude of 1,666 metres and continue on to Lac de Gaube at 1,730 metres.
(3) Walk along the right-hand side of the lake as you ascend (left bank). Lac de Gaube is a very pale blue. The path crosses scree and begins to climb again shortly after the lake.
There is still a long way to go and the path climbs in stages. However, the slope is never too steep. You will cross the Gave des Oulettes twice. The forest has now given way to open country and you begin to see the peaks, notably the Vignemale.
(4) Take a break at the Oulettes de Gaube mountain hut at 2,151 m, then follow the same path back in the opposite direction to return to the starting point (S/E).
