Circular Grand Barbat starting from Ilhéou

A circular loop starting from the small Ilhéou refuge, for experienced mountaineers seeking solitude.
Please note: the route is mostly off-track and poorly marked, over very rugged terrain (scree, rocky slopes, snowfields, steep slopes).
Should only be attempted in clear weather.
Extensive panoramic views due to its position set back from the border ridge: Néouvielle, Marboré, Vignemale, Balaïtous...

Description of the walk

Start from the Ilhéou mountain hut.

(S/E) From the refuge, cross the lake’s spillway and head right to follow theGR®10uphill towards the Col d’Iléhou, which forms a large plateau.

(1) From there, head left, off the path, up gentle slopes. Quickly locate the 2443-metre point, which forms a notch that you must reach, in the middle of one of the ridges descending from the Barbat.

(2) After this point, continue along the hillside through the scree without losing altitude, to rejoin the valley through which the route from Lac d’Estaing ascends (as described in the ‘Cauterets Val D’Azun’ guidebook published by Rando). Then head up to your left towards the Brèche du Barbat; if there is hard snow beneath the breach, you can bypass the snowfield to the left.

(3) From the breach, head up to the left, initially slightly to the left of the ridge and then along a much more obvious path, to reach the summit of the Grand Barbat.

(4) For the descent, return to the pass.

(3) From there, you can follow a circular route (in dry weather, this involves a short, very steep grassy section).
Head down towards Lac du Pic Arrouy and, as soon as you can, start traversing left across the scree to avoid losing too much altitude.
Directly below the Brèche du Hourat, head up the steep slope to reach it.

(5) Enjoy a final panoramic view of the Balaïtous before descending a steep slope of snow or scree, depending on conditions; head down the valley, veering slightly to the left to reach a small lake (lac de petite superficie), named Hourat on the TOP25 map. Not to be confused with Lac du Hourat, a little further south.

(6) From this small lake, look for a passage to the right of a small hillock (even though it may initially seem more obvious to go round it on the left).
Make your way down as best you can, following paths through the rhododendrons, to rejoin the Ilheou/Hourat route.
You can then take a breather and follow the obvious path that skirts Lake Ilhéou to the left, before making your well-deserved return to the refuge (S/E).

Thanks for this guide – I’ve been wanting to climb Grand Barbat from Ilhéou for ages. Given the steepness of the descent from the summit, wouldn’t it be easier to do this circular route the other way round?
Thanks for your feedback.

From the Col d’Ilhéou right back to Lac d’Ilhéou, it’s practically nothing but scree…
Around the Barbat and Hourat passes, there’s nothing but unstable scree that rolls down a very steep slope.
The landscape is lunar and rather hostile; in fact, I didn’t meet a single person during the whole hike. The estimated time is also greatly underestimated given the difficulties encountered.
I think it’s better to explore the Grand Barbat via the usual route from Lake Estaing, for a less gruelling hike that avoids the two stony passes and winds through a less austere landscape.

In short, a circular route that I won’t be doing again and which I wouldn’t recommend.

We couldn’t find the route. There were cairns dotted about everywhere, but they didn’t help us. We gave up on the notch – it was too high compared to the one shown on the map. A shame, as the weather was lovely.

Hello. How long does the round trip to Grand Barbat from the Breche de Barbat take (I’d say about an hour)?

The route I’d like to take is Lac d’Estaing – Lac de Barbat – Breche de Barbat – Breche du Hourat – Lac d’Ilhéou – Arras hut – back to Lac d’Estaing (without the climb up to Grand Barbat to cut down on the time).

I’m trying to estimate how long this ‘circular’ process will take… Perhaps 8–9 hours?

Also, during the first fortnight of July, is it possible to reach the Breche de Barbat (snowfields...)?

Thank you for your replies.

A very challenging hike for an average hiker, but not impossible. Not recommended for anyone who is even slightly afraid of heights.
However, the estimated duration of the hike is a bit optimistic for an average hiker. It’s best to allow a full day if you’re unsure of your hiking ability. There isn’t much water along the route, so make sure you pack enough.

Despite the difficulty, this walk is magnificent, offering a real sense of being cut off from the world for a moment.
