From the Ilhéou Refuge to the Wallon Refuge via the Opale Lakes

Second day of a three-day route in the Central Pyrenees National Park.
The day will begin with a fairly steep climb, but will allow you to see a multitude of high-altitude lakes before arriving at the Wallon refuge.
If there is not enough time, the visit to the Opale lakes can be omitted.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: 3 days in the Central Pyrenees Park from Cauterets

Description of the walk

(S) After spending the night at the refuge (1988 m), we head south along the left side of the lake.

(1) Very quickly, the path climbs steeply, making several hairpin bends.

(2) Arrival at the Col de la Haugade Inférieur (2,311 m). Please note that the pass is on the right as you come out of the hairpin bends of this climb. It is due south. Take the opportunity to enjoy the view and quench your thirst. Descend due south.

(3) Pass the Col de Haugade Supérieur (2,378 m).

(4) Arrive at a fork (2,290 m) on this descending path.
Following a landslide reported in 2022, go straight ahead to reach the small Lac du Pourtet. Pass a spring before reaching a fork.

(5) Continue straight ahead towards Lac du Pourtet.

(6) Arrive at Lac du Pourtet (altitude 2,420 m). The path heads due south. Take care on the tricky section above the lake when there is still some snow. Pass by Lac Nère (2,309 m). Descend, making sure to follow the well-marked path, which has been restored in places.

(7) When you reach a fork (altitude 2043 m), turn right heading due west towards Lacs de Cambalès and Lacs d'Opale (2320 m). After 500 m, a path branches off to the left towards Lacs d'Opale.

(8) You will arrive in the middle of the Lacs d'Opale (2350 m). A mineral landscape unfolds before you. A short rest will do you good. You are not far from the second refuge.
Turn back to the previous fork.

(7) Turn right towards the Refuge Wallon (or Marcadau). The path descends, passing through a forest of mountain pines in places. Pass close to the Gave de Cauterets.

(E) Arrive at the Refuge Wallon (1,865 m). There is a small chapel on the right before you arrive. The landscape around this spot is magnificent. To the south: Col d'Arratille. To the south-west: Port du Marcadau. To the west: Col de La Fache.

Notes

Information about refuges: HP refuges are generally open from mid-June to mid-September.
To my knowledge, there are no huts, as we are in the high mountains.
There are rock shelters.
There is a spring at 2,225 m above the Embarrat Lakes, on the path before reaching (5).
This is a high mountain area in the Hautes-Pyrénées, so please respect the environment and wear the required equipment.
You will need: good mid-cut boots, at least 2 litres of water, a snack for lunch, warm clothing, rain gear, mountain bivouac equipment if necessary, and walking sticks if necessary.
The weather can change very quickly during July and August.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

I advise you to record as many memories as possible in your brain and on your camera, as this part of the Hautes Pyrénées is magnificent, the paths are at high altitude and little used, except near the refuges.

The Wallon Marcadau refuge will reopen on 19 August 2022.

A beautiful hike where the scenery gradually unfolds as a reward for your efforts.

We followed the instructions and took the shortcut between points 2 and 4 (recommended).
We didn't have time to make the detour to the Opale lakes and the weather wasn't great that day.

The Wallon-Marcadau refuge has been completely renovated. The area around the refuge is a real haven of peace and quiet.

Hello
We confirm that the passage through the rocky area is impassable or very dangerous. We lost an hour and a half crossing it. Fortunately, no one was injured!
Take the shortcut!
Enjoy your hike!

Hello,
I completed part of the hike (from point 1 to point 3 in particular). There has been a rockslide, and the path between points 2 and 3 has been completely washed away. Very few cairns remain, but progress is very difficult. I recommend taking the shortcut instead.
Kind regards

Beautiful route,
but be aware that most of the marcheur65 routes are very difficult and absolutely not accessible to average hikers, even those who walk 10 hours a day on flat terrain (approx. 30/40 km). The cumulative elevation gain is very significant.

I did Néouvielle + this one, you have to look carefully at the map to change the stages.

So, the trek is possible if you camp (sleep anywhere) or stay in refuges, but it's too difficult if the stages are too long. This applies to 80% of people. Of course, for mountaineers, there's no particular problem.

Pleasant hike under a beautiful blue sky. Temperature 28°C.
We dipped our feet in the streams from time to time to cool off.
Encountered marmots on the way back.
