Tuc Arrouy via the waterfalls, the lake and the Ilhéou refuge.

Lac d'Ilhéou, nestled in the hollow of a majestic cirque, reveals emerald blue-green waters that invite contemplation. Tuc Arrouy offers a bird's eye view of the lake and a myriad of Pyrenean peaks.
These are the ingredients for a hike rich in magnificent landscapes and emotions.

Description of the walk

South of the Cauterets resort, take the Pont d'Espagne road. At the resort exit, turn right onto the D312 or Route de Cambasque. Follow this road up to the Cambasque car park.

(S/E) At the entrance to the Cambasque car park, take the path to the left of the ski lifts, to the south-west, until you reach a wide avenue.

(1) Take this lane and climb up the left bank (right) of the Gave d'Ilhéou or Gave de Cambasque. After passing the Sahucs waterfalls visible on the river, you will reach the Sahucs Bridge.

(2) Cross this bridge to reach the right bank. Continue to the right on the track (GR®10) for about 300 metres.

(3) Leave the GR®10 on your left. Continue along the track, which now climbs up the valley to the left of the stream. A little further up, you will see the Ilhéou waterfalls. At a hairpin bend, you will reach a junction with the waterfall trail.

(4) Leave the track and take the path on the right, then after a short, slightly steep climb, you will reach the Belvédère des Cascades viewpoint.

(5) Turn around.

(4) Back on the track, turn right, cross the GR®10, pass the Escale d'Ilhéou, then rejoin the GR®10.

(6) Leave the track and turn left onto the GR®10. The path climbs steeply over the rocks for a few metres, then continues more gently through the mountain pastures. The path, which has a few shaded areas on this section, rejoins the track.

(7) Follow it up to the left, pass Lac Noir, then reach a crossroads of paths near Lac d'Ilhéou.
Turn right towards the welcoming Refuge d'Ilhéou.

(8) After a well-deserved break, turn back.

(9) Take the path on the right that runs along the lake towards the Col de la Hougade. Pass a bivouac area, then climb the switchbacks to reach the Col Inférieur de la Hougade.

(10) Follow the markings and reach the Col Supérieur de la Hougade.

(11) From there, climb a few metres up the path on your left, turn slightly to the right, then walk along the hillside. After a final short, fairly steep climb, you will reach the summit of Tuc Arrouy on your left.

(12) Retrace your steps until you reach the crossroads near Lac d'Ilhéou and the refuge.

(9) Descend along the track, passing a sheepfold, until you reach the first path you took on the way up.

(1) Return to the car park (S/E).
