From the Anterne Alfred Wills Mountain Hut to Les Houches

This fifth stage crosses the Montagne d'Anterne and, via a high-mountain route, the Aiguilles Rouges massif, offering superb views of the Mont Blanc massif. From the refuge, dominated by the famous Rochers des Fiz, the GR®5 trail climbs to the lake and then to the Col d'Anterne. From there, it descends to the Moëde Anterne Refuge and the Chalets de Moëde before skirting the rocky ridge of the Fonds de Moëde. It crosses the Diosaz at the Pont d’Arvelé to climb the slope of the Aiguilles Rouges massif, passing the ruins of the Chalets d’Arvelé before ascending to the Col du Brévent. After a short descent, it climbs again via ladders up the Brévent ridge and reaches its summit, which offers a splendid panorama of the Mont Blanc massif. The GR®5, via a very long and arduous descent, passes the Refuge de Bellachat and then, further down, the monumental statue of Christ the King, before crossing the Arve and entering Les Houches.

Description of the walk

(S) From the Refuge d'Anterne Alfred Wills, rejoin the GR®5 heading south-east. Cross a stream and climb a stony ridge. Head east and continue climbing. Head south and reach an unnamed pass.

(1) Continue south and descend slightly. Walk along the right-hand side of Lac d'Anterne.

(2) At the far end of the lake, continue south-south-west and climb steadily up to the Col d'Anterne.

(3) Switch to the opposite side and descend its steep slope. After a few hairpin bends, turn left (east) and arrive at a junction with a wide path (signpost).

(4) Continue along the GR®5 to the left (ignore the GRP® du Pays du Mont Blanc to the right). Immediately cross a stream and reach a Fork in the road. Take the right-hand path to reach the nearby Moëde Anterne Refuge.

(5) Follow the wide path downwards (south-south-west) to a Fork in the road. At the signpost, take the path on the left. After a left-hand bend, you’ll reach a T-junction.

(6) Head left (east-northeast). At the next fork, take the path on the right (east-southeast). Cross a stream and then follow the Moëde stream on your right. Go round the rocky outcrop of the Fonds de Moëde on the right and reach the Pont d'Arlevé.

(7) Cross the Diosaz and climb up the other side. After two hairpin bends, at a junction, take the path on the right (south). Climb gently along the rocky ridge of the Aiguilles Rouges and reach the ruins of the Chalets d’Arlevé.

(8) Continue straight on (south-southeast) and cross a few streams. At an altitude of around 2000 m, enter the steep valley of the Torrent de la Ravine (south-east; this section may still be snow-covered early in the season). Climb the valley via numerous hairpin bends to reach the Col du Brévent (beautiful view of Mont Blanc).

(9) Turn right (west) and continue along the GR®5 and GR®TMB towards the Refuge de Bellachat. Following a wide arc, which may be snow-covered, gradually head south. Climb a rocky, steep section using ladders and reach a junction at the foot of the Clocher du Brévent.

(10) Follow a good path to the right (south-west) close to the ridge. This will take you to the summit of Le Brévent (upper cable car station; orientation table; superb views of the Mont Blanc massif).

(11) Descend the southern ridge (ignore a path on the right leading to Lac du Brévent). Head south-west and reach the Tête de Bellachat.

(12) Descend south-west. At a junction, turn left and head for the Refuge de Bellachat.

(13) Continue (west-north-west) along the GR®5. Then descend the switchbacks, ignoring the side paths. Head south then south-west and descend. Cross the Torrent de Lapaz ravine, climb up the other side and, shortly afterwards, reach a junction (signpost).

(14) Head right (south-west) and arrive at a junction (signpost).

(15) Continue straight ahead (ignore the path going uphill to the right). After about 200 m, reach another junction (signpost).

(16) Go straight on (ignore the path on the right) and, after about 50 metres, ignore a path on the left. About 250 m further on, ignore a path branching off to the right and continue straight on for about 100 m to reach a junction (signpost).

(17) Then take a sharp left-hand bend (east-southeast). Further down, take a sharp right-hand bend (ignore the path opposite). Descend to a road (Chemin de Merlet).

(18) Follow the road as it continues (west) and pass a car park. Immediately after, leave the road and take a path that branches off sharply to the left. After a right-hand bend, resume heading west-south-west. At a junction (signpost), continue straight on along the Chemin de Coupeau to Merlet.

(19) At the next junction (signpost), leave the path and head down the hairpin bends to the left (south). You’ll reach a crossroads where the imposing statue of Christ the King stands.

(20) Take the second track on the right, heading due west. After about a hundred metres, take a sharp left-hand bend. Follow the hairpin bends down to reach a junction (signpost).

(21) Turn right, continue downhill and join a small road, the Chemin des Eaux Rousses.

(22) Follow the road down to the left. After a right-hand bend, ignore a road coming from the left and pass through a hamlet. Walk alongside a railway line on your left and reach a junction at the entrance to Les Houches.

(23) Take the bridge over the railway line on the left. Follow the road along the Arve for about a hundred metres.

(24) At Les Houches station, turn left and take the bridge over the Arve and then the motorway. After a series of bends, you’ll reach a junction.

(25) Turn right onto Avenue des Alpages and cross the Torrent de la Griaz. At the junction immediately ahead, follow Rue de l'Église straight on.

(26) At the church forecourt, go down the steps on the right. At the bottom, you’ll come out onto Allée des Sorbiers and immediately find the Michel Fago Lodge (E).
