Refuge des Fonts - Refuge de la Vogealle

A lovely hike in the Cirque du Fer à Cheval with its remarkable waterfalls, a stop at the Bout du Monde, with a balcony path through the forest to reach the Chalet du Boret, and a steady climb to reach the Refuge de la Vogealle perched on a pretty plateau.

Important note: this route requires a taxi shuttle from the Cascade du Rouget to the Cirque du Fer à Cheval (14 km) to reduce the walking distance.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Tour of the Dents Blanches massif, Ruan, Tenneverge

Description of the walk

(S) From the Refuge des Fonts, follow the downhill track that runs alongside the Giffre with its deep and remarkable gorges until you reach La Célière.

(1) Turn left onto the descending path with numerous roots, pass the chalets and reach the footbridge over the Giffre des Fonds.
Continue along the slightly uphill path to reach a car park and the paved road.

(2) Follow it to the right, passing the village of Fardelay. Take the paths that cross the road in places and arrive at the Rouget waterfall, a remarkable site.

(3) Take the shuttle taxi here to reach the Cirque du Fer à Cheval car park.

(4) Bridge over the Giffre (river) - a tributary of the Arve.

(5) Turn left onto a fairly flat track following theGRP® Tour des Dents Blanches trail marked in red and yellow. Follow a gentle, steady climb to reach the Chalet de Prazon.

(6) Ignore the path on the left and continue along the right bank of the Giffre to reach the Bout du Monde, where you will find a signpost.

(7) Stay on theGRP® and, after a nearly 180° turn, begin a more sustained climb. Then follow the well-shaded balcony trail. After a long traverse, you will reach the Chalet du Boret.

(8) Take the path on the right and climb steadily to reach the Pierre du Dard and its cross.

(9) Keep right on theGRP® to head north, pass the place called Le Darde, follow the climbing sites and finish at the Refuge de la Vogealle, the end of today's stage (E).
