From Coll de l'Ullat to Puig Neulós via the GR®10.

Circular route starting from the Col de l'Ullat, which leads along the ridge to the Pic du Néoulous with remarkable panoramic views on both sides of the Côte Vermeille, on the French side and on Spanish territory, not to mention the eastern Pyrenees. Return via an easy route. Definitely worth doing in good weather, but the wind can be strong on the ridge up to the summit.

Description of the walk

From Le Perthus, take the D71 then the D71a to park at Coll de l'Ullat, very close to the Albère chalet-inn.

(S/E) Set off from the yellow signposts located along the road just after the chalet-inn car park. Climb through the forest towards Roc dels Tres Termes (rock of the three terms) via theGR®10. The climb is slow as it is relatively steep. Arrive at the first ridge. Keep to the right to reach the rocky plateau of Roc Foirós (panoramic views of the French (right) and Spanish (left) landscapes with the Pyrenees mountain range).

(1) Turn back to rejoin theGR®. A little further on, continue along the left, entering the undergrowth again. TheGR® winds its way along flat ground until it joins the tarmac service road.

(2) Just before this, climb a few metres to the right to continue following theGR® and its markings, which appear regularly on rocks. It is on the left at the French-Spanish border, marked by barbed wire. Continue climbing, keeping the TDF relay antenna in sight. There are beautiful views to the right over Spain and the sea in the distance, behind you and to the left over the Pyrenean mountains and the Roussillon plain. You will arrive at the summit of Puig du Neulós (360° panorama; stone building dating from 1886; IGN geodetic marker).

(3) Take the gentle descent along the fence surrounding the relay station. Return to the service road and descend to the second crossroads with a track. Leave theGR®10. Turn right onto this stony then grassy path marked in yellow. Pass a rock lying across the path before turning left to descend, then further on to the right (path marked in yellow). The path passes a watering hole for livestock, approaches a meadow, crosses it at its end and continues downhill through the undergrowth. At its end, it leads to a DFCI forest track. Old orientation table with a beautiful view of the Roussillon plain.

(4) Turn left (south-west) onto this track and follow it until it joins the service road. Then keep to the right.

(5) Carefully follow the service road (busy in summer) which descends gently to Coll de l'Ullat and the car park (S/E).

Notes

Walking sticks are very useful on the climb to Pic du Néoulous and then on the descent through the woods, where the slopes are more or less steep.

(S/E) Shaded picnic area at Coll de l'Ullat on the left - continue a few dozen metres past the chalet car park. There is a spring nearby. Tables by the roadside with a fire pit.
There are also tables on the left-hand side of the road, on the slope opposite the chalet.

Please note that it is possible to eat and stay at the chalet-inn, subject to reservation.

Bring a pair of binoculars to enjoy the many panoramic views offered by this circular route even more.

Worth a visit

(S/E) Coll de l'Ullat and its surroundings in the undergrowth are very pleasant in good weather and warm temperatures. There are springs.

(1) Beautiful views from the rocky plateau of Roc Foirós.

Puig Neulós: 360° panoramic view.

(4) Altitude 1130 m - beautiful view of the Roussillon plain.

Very beautiful hike, slight hesitation at the antennas when leaving the GR, but the view is exceptional.
the antennas spoil the view a little
The return via the forest track is of little interest apart from the brief passage through the forest

I agree with Bernard, a little detour to the ice well (on the Spanish side) is worth a look.

I would like to add that I highly recommend visiting this historic site (see "Puit de neige de Neulos" on the web), which was recently restored and can be easily reached in less than 15 minutes. There are said to be around a hundred of these "snow wells" in the Pyrénées-Orientales, similar to the one located on Spanish territory, just 200 metres below the border that runs along the ridge and accessible via the only barrier halfway across the plateau before reaching Puig Neoulos. A few dozen metres after crossing the border, a discreet path on the left leads directly to a small copse in a few minutes, and information panels help to explain the origin of such a building. Now somewhat familiar with this magnificent hike, which in good weather leads to an EXCEPTIONAL 360° view, I am surprised that there is no signposting to this unusual historical building.

A beautiful hike that can even be enjoyed in summer. The arrival at Pic Neoulous offers incredible views of the Roussillon plain, Rosas Bay and our magnificent Canigou 😍

Beautiful hike. The start is quite steep but perfectly manageable for occasional walkers like us. We did it when the sky was low and we stayed in the clouds, so we didn't get the view we were hoping for, but walking in the clouds was also very pleasant. The weather was cool, so you need to wrap up warm as it's quite windy. Very pleasant descent through a beautiful forest.
There were lots of people around the chalet and we also met quite a few people during the hike.

A beautiful, invigorating hike (we did it in the morning and had to wrap up warm because it was a tramontane day!). A nice climb at the start, quickly rewarded with lovely views of Spain and the Canigou massif, then further on, the Perpignan plain and the Mediterranean!
Perfect route.

I did this hike on 6/05/23 with a group of 13 people. The weather was beautiful, with a sea of clouds at around 800 metres above sea level and clear skies above. There was a stunning view of Canigou. The ascent took 1 hour and 45 minutes (at a leisurely pace). It is accessible to walkers. I am returning on 7 June with another group for a slightly longer route via the Tanyarède refuge.
