Puig dels Quatre Termes via Collada de l'Orri from La Farga (Sorède)

A challenging hike offering a variety of landscapes.
The path along the border ridge offers views of the coastline below and the peaks in the distance.
This hike is classified as very difficult because the climb is steep and you will have to cross torrents.
The return journey is also steep and you will need to pay close attention to the cairns and old yellow markings.
Note: This hike should only be attempted when there is no rain or thunderstorm forecast. (1)
A sense of direction is necessary. The GPX track is necessary. Remember to download the track and map before setting off.

Description of the walk

Go to Sorède, follow "la Vallée Heureuse", pass the animal park, cross a bridge over the Ribera de Suareda, continue uphill, and look for a parking area with a separate traffic direction (2). Cross the green road bridge over the Ribera de Sureda (Sorède river), continue for about 60 metres and park after the bend (small square).

(S/E) Parking area (190 m), on Rue dels Castaneyrs or Rue de la Farga. Continue uphill along the road (Rue de la Farga). Keep left for 50 m.

Yellow markings

When you reach the directional signs and the flood warning on the left (1).
Turn left between the houses. Cross the ford. Continue towards the concrete footbridge. In case of flooding, see (2) in practical information.

(1) Fork (200 m). Directional signpost. Go up to the right into the forest. Cross the first stream. Continue climbing.

(2) Fork (240 m). Turn right. Cross two streams.
Caution: From this point onwards, you will need to cross rivers and streams without footbridges.
Cross the Ribera del Tallat d'en Bac (300 m), a stream, and the Còrrec del Cortal de Maig (440 m).
Continue climbing. Pass the altitude (485 m). The route now heads generally south.

(3)Caution: (observed on 2 August 2021), at around 500 m, do not climb to the left via a clearly visible mountain bike trail.
Continue straight ahead, then cross two streams, the Còrrec de la Tassió and another stream. The path is in very poor condition (observed on 2 August 2021).
N.B. The path now crosses from one bank to the other; see practical information.
Pass the altitude 610. Look out for the cairns on either side of the stream and make sure you find the old yellow markings.

(4) Fork (690 m). Take the left fork. The path overlooks the Còrrec de la Tassió, staying on the left bank. Pass under an old scrap metal trestle and next to some old ruined huts (elevation 742).

(5) Cross the stream at around 750 m. The path climbs steeply, winding several times, heading south-west. Stay on the right bank of the Còrrec de la Tassió as you climb through this beautiful beech forest. You will come out onto a track.

(6) Track and path junction (920 m). Continue straight ahead towards the Fontaine de l'Orri. Climb up through the woods to the south-east. You will see a square wooden post marking the Collada de l'Orri and the GR®10 red and white markings.

Red and whiteGR®10markings

(7) Collada de l'Orri: an ideal spot for a break. A new fence separates France from Spain.
On the right, to the north-west, is the Tanyareda refuge before Puig Neulos, clearly visible with its relay antennas.
Follow the GR®10 and its red and white markings to the left, with the fence on your right.
Much further on, descend slightly towards a track on the left. There are French and Spanish signposts (1025 m) at this pass.

(8) At Coll de l'Estaca, head slightly to the right into the forest on the GR®10, marked in red and white. Climb up, going around Puig de Pradets on your right. After a wide circular loop, you will arrive at Coll dels Emigrants. Continue to the left for 150 m.

Yellow markings

(9) Fork (1140 m). Leave the red and white markings. There is a new signpost.
On your right, Puig dels Quatre Termes is very easily accessible via a return trip. Exceptional views of the Mediterranean beaches and distant peaks.
Turn left towards Coll dels Tres Faigs (Three Beech Trees Pass), descending into the woods, heading north-northeast. Follow the cairns and old yellow markings, descending for 200 m with the fence on your right.

Fork (1080 m). Continue straight ahead towards an open area. Directional post. Do not descend towards La Vall. Follow Coll dels Tres Faigs (three beeches).

(10) Crossroads of tracks and paths (altitude 1041). Three new directional posts spaced apart.
Head opposite, north-east, towards Coll de l'Aranyó. Follow the old yellow markings. The path then heads due north. Pay attention to the cairns and yellow markings.
You will arrive in an open area overgrown with ferns.
(11) Coll de l'Aranyó (altitude 899). The area is sometimes cluttered. The path is still visible as it climbs steeply northwards. Then follow the ridge line. Pass the altitude 934. You will find a very good, clearly visible path. Scattered yellow markings and numerous cairns.
Superb panorama: the Canigou massif on the left and the coastline on the right.
The path then descends continuously through the forest. Pass the altitude 875. You will arrive in a confusing area of the forest.
Caution: find this fork (altitude 686). There is a recent signpost at this location.

(12) Turn left, heading south, onto a path that descends steeply in hairpin bends for 250 m. Follow the cairns and the old yellow markings.

(13) Fork (610 m). Signpost indicating La Farga and Font dels Miracle, which is easily accessible.
Turn right, heading north-west. Descend a few hairpin bends, then the path remains flat for 300 m.

(14) Fork (altitude 560 m). Turn left. There is a signpost. The path remains flat for 500 m. The path then descends. Pass near the point marked 461. The path heads due west. Descend several hairpin bends. Cross a stream (altitude 370 m). Continue to follow the old yellow markings. Cross another stream (altitude 355 m).

(15) Fork in the path. Point marked 346. Directional signpost. Turn right. The path heads due north. Cross another stream (altitude 275 m). Continue for 250 m.

(16) Do not stay on the flat and do not cross the Correc de l'Espinàs where there is a marker No. 15.
Turn left heading due west, descending steeply down a ravined path.
Follow the yellow markings carefully. The path climbs slightly to the left, overlooking the Ribera de Sureda. Then descend via a passage equipped with wooden logs to finally cross the concrete footbridge.

(1) Turn right, cross the ford, reach the path and turn right to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Important: you will need a walking stick to cross all the streams and còrrec that mark the climb.
The GPX track is essential. Remember to download the track and map before setting off.
The climb along Ribera de Sudera consists of following the cairns that mark the areas where you can cross the streams. The old yellow markings and new signposts are still in place (02/08/2021).

Water points at Font de l'Orri (6) and dels Miracles (13). Bring a filter or tablets, just in case.

This is a mid-mountain area. So, as you would expect, you will need: rain gear, water, snacks, route map, description, map, GPS, camera, good walking shoes and a walking stick.

This hike is safe, but it requires good physical fitness and a sense of direction.

The elevation gain is over 1,200 m. IBP = 110 HKG

(1) Warning at the start of the hike regarding periods of high water in the streams...

(2) If it is impossible to cross the ford, drive back down to the car park you saw on the way up (forge car park). Start the hike from this car park => Walk up the road for 40 m and go through a gate on the left to climb up a path that leads to the wp (16).

Worth a visit

Sorède
Excerpt from the guidebook 66 Pays Catalan
''The place known as La Farga is the site of one of the famous "Catalan forges" that spread throughout the Pyrenees before being replaced by the blast furnace industry. The process known as "à la Catalane" made it possible to extract steel (Ferro Bó) of exceptional quality without melting the ore: Menera or El mener.
This long and delicate operation was directed by Master Ironworkers (Mestre da Farga), who passed on this "sulphur-haloed" knowledge from father to son or from master to disciple since the High Middle Ages.

Superb challenging hike
where you can put your sense of direction to good use, learn about the history of the valley with its forestry operations (cableway, ruins) and medieval mill, and cross various rivers. The superb panorama (unfortunately foggy that day) on the GR 10 from Orri to Puig dels 4 Termes, the descent to Puig Arany and the return via Font dels Miraclès. One of my favourite hikes in this valley (be careful with the landmarks at the river crossings, it is easy to get lost as there are no tracks, especially when climbing the Tassio (a few cairns remain), so don't hesitate to download the GPX track. Completed on 4 November 2025.

Very beautiful hike that climbs up the first part.
There are one or two places where the trail is not very visible on the climb, but otherwise it's perfect.
I took the liberty of going to the summit because the path doesn't go there. Go for it, there's a magnificent view of the sea.

A splendid route that zigzags across various ravines (about fifteen crossings of small streams that can become torrents that are difficult to cross in case of flooding). The section on the ridges (GR10) is as magnificent as ever. In my opinion, a GPS track is essential, as the markings are not clearly visible everywhere. A very quiet route (difficult?), it is beautiful but quite a challenging hike. Five hours of ascent and three hours of descent... a sporty day! Note: I see in the previous comments some opinions that clearly do not apply to this hiking route. An anomaly that could cause confusion.

The hike took place in October and at times the trail was difficult to follow because the leaves were covering the path, but the yellow PR markers helped me a lot.

Hike completed in 3 hours and 40 minutes with a running descent. The yellow markings are sometimes rather disappointing, but nothing insurmountable. Thanks to the app, you can find your way around. I must have lost 15-20 minutes on the way up. I only came across two or three people, so for an Easter weekend, you could say that the route is not very busy, which is nice.

The route was completed in very clear weather but with a rather strong south-easterly wind... A demanding route but rich in panoramic views full of spring colours. Fortunately, there was little water in the streams to cross, which made them fairly easy to cross. Although old in places, the signposting is adequate.
For the return trip, we preferred to go past Roc de Las Médas and take part of the path that leads to N.D. du Ch, which is a bit chaotic at Roc but allows for a longer view of the plain and the happy valley. We descended at the next fork. In short, a very beautiful route!

A superb hike that takes us to the Eastern Pyrenees between the sky and the Mediterranean Sea, even though we did it in the opposite direction to the one indicated.

The two fountains along the way, "Font des Miracles" and "Font de l'Orri", were drinkable as is, with no need to boil the water!
There are numerous stream crossings (be careful if it rains or if the water is high), and the view from the French-Spanish border is magnificent.

Sorry, I had taken the guidebook for this hike, but looking at the map and the terrain on site, I did a circular route passing by the La Massana tower, the Sailfort peak, the Quatre termes, and the ridge line leading to Roc des Médes before descending to La Vall, the starting point. This route allows you to see the Mediterranean Sea from the ridge as you climb.
We covered 1,180 metres of elevation gain over a distance of 17.3 km.
