From Laroque-des-Albères, coming from Sorède, head towards Villelongue-dels-Monts. After the road bridge over the Ribera de la Roca, turn left at the very top into Rue de la Roca Vella (one-way for 350 m).
Please note: On the return journey, turn left onto Rue des Oliviers, then right onto the D11 and right again towards Laroque-des-Albères.
The route starts from a car park on the right, on Rue de Roca Vella, before the small municipal park.
Yellow markings throughout the route. Directional signs at key points.
(S/E) With your back to the car park, turn right towards the municipal park and continue straight on along the road, which narrows and becomes a little rough as it climbs.
(1) Pass the ruins of Sant Fructos de Roca Vella, then a section of concrete track and a final house on the left. You’ll emerge onto a wide, open section of the firebreak track.
(2) At the underground cistern on your right, continue along the track.
Leave the ascending return path on your left.
Very soon after the sharp left-hand bend in the track, head straight on up a steep, steeply ascending path through the forest, following a sunken, rutted track.
Cross the track twice as you continue the steep climb, heading due south, along this sunken path. A few signposts help guide your way through this low-lying woodland. You will reach a crossroads.
(3) At an altitude of 499 metres, continue straight ahead up the steep slope along a ridge path through the undergrowth. Clearings in the forest offer views of the surrounding landscape. The path, still in the forest, climbs steeply and heads south-west, then south. Pass the points with an altitude of 600, 710 and 811. Finally emerge at a sharp bend in a track at the altitude of 903. The signpost has been destroyed.
(4) Climb the embankment and continue along the path opposite, still in the forest, keeping the same southerly direction.
The vegetation may be dense with some patches of brambles.
The slope is steep again. It levels off after the 976-metre mark. You’ll come out onto a grassy track in an open area. Signposts are in place.
(5) Turn right, heading due west, for a round trip of about a hundred metres, towards Puig d’Orella at an altitude of 1031 metres, slightly to the left and higher up. A very beautiful 360° view. Turn back to the junction of the path you came along.
(5) Continue straight on, south-east, along this grassy track towards Coll de l’Ullat at an altitude of 938 metres. This is a major junction, a key point on theGR® 10.
''A mountain hut is open almost all year round, where you can get a drink, have a meal or spend the night.''
Beautiful views to the east and south-east. A lovely spot for a lunch break.
(6) Continue left along the road leading towards Neulós. After about 150 m, you’ll reach the Reina des Fonts (Queen of the Fountains). Signpost and picnic table. Area where fires are permitted.
(7) Head down to the left, due north, along a path that is consistently marked in yellow.
Caution: this path is in very poor condition in many places; take extra care.
The recorded route matches the actual terrain. Do not cross the Còrrec del Coll de l’Ullat.
Cross a first small, rough track (at around 880 m) and a second track suitable for vehicles (at around 750 m).
At around 650 m, you’ll come out at a right-hand bend on the track. Leave the track to find the continuation of the marked, rough path opposite. Further down, at around 560 m, follow this track again on your right.
Le Casot de Guarda is accessible on the right by following the track for 400 m.
Continue due north along the rough track to reach another track at a large junction of tracks and paths at around 490 m.
Enjoy the beautiful views during this descent.
(8) Cut across the track and continue straight ahead along the path, which is in much better condition.
“Pass the other access to Casot del Guarda on the right and Font de la Vernosa on the left.”
(9) On the right, slightly higher up, you will find the remains of the snow well. Continue the descent along the easier path. There are some lovely views during this descent.
At around 320 m, the path faces due north and remains flat. Look out for the signpost on the left. A very large cairn has been ‘built’ at this junction. There is a signpost here.
(10) Descend to the left along a very steep path, clearly marked on the ground and signposted in yellow.
Cross the footbridge over the Ribera de Roca. Climb up the opposite side and rejoin the correct path, which rises slightly through the forest. You’ll arrive at a small clearing where the Casot d’en Lic is on your right.
It is a lovely spot for a break. There are information boards here.
(11) Continue along the path. Take care, as the path is steep and fitted with a cable. Steps have been carved into the rock to make the small exposed area safer in wet weather.
You’ll soon come out onto a bend in a track suitable for vehicles.
A stunning view of the northern plain and the north-eastern Mediterranean.
(12) Turn right and head down this track for about 200 m.
(13) Look for a cairn and the yellow markings at the start of the path that cuts across the bend in the track and leads to the underground cistern.
If you miss this path, the track leads to the underground cistern.
(2) In this open area, head right down the track to reach the car park (S/E).
