Description of the walk

Park at the Col de Rousset, on the south side (Die side).
(S/E) Leave the car park and tunnel behind you. Follow the road for about 50 metres. Turn right onto the path marked "Via Ferrata". Follow theGR® 93.

(1) Continue straight ahead, leaving the path that branches off to the left towards the Chironne sheepfold.

(2) Shortly after the sheepfold and the cistern located in the mountain pastures, turn left at the top of the hill. Leave theGR®93and continue along this track, keeping the forest on your left.

(3) Continue with the forest on your right and keep heading south.

(4) When you reach the top, admire the Diois valley and wait for the vultures to take flight.

For the return journey, we recommend taking the same route in reverse.

Notes

In strong sunlight, bring water and a hat.
If you enjoy photographing wildlife and flora, don't forget your telephoto lens and a macro lens for botanical photos during the flowering season.
Of course, binoculars are highly recommended, or even a telescope.
Patience at the top of the But de l'Aiglette is often rewarded with long glides by vultures or the sight of ibex basking in the sun!
Be careful not to disturb the vultures during the nesting season.

Worth a visit

Die and the entire valley.

A magnificent, easy walk that is accessible to all. Magnificent, sweeping landscapes with vultures flying overhead. Herds and sheepdogs are present but clearly marked with signs.

A beautiful hike with magnificent scenery, but very windy on the day we went...
In summer, make sure you bring plenty of water and a hat because there isn't much shade along the route!!!!

Great family outing or for beginners, with beautiful views and peregrine falcons and kestrels (no vultures on Sunday, but there were some in July).
However, the car park after the tunnel is full of logs and it is very difficult to park there. There are a few spaces a little further down for the via ferrata. At the Col de Chironne, the recommended route is to start from the car park at Saint Alexis just before the Col du Rousset or to park before the tunnel and go around the But de Neve, which is a 5 km detour with an additional 300 m of elevation gain (but you have to know this as it is not indicated after the tunnel). Work on the tunnel will be completed at the end of 2023.

A very beautiful hike, with a few hiccups on the descent due to the snow still covering the plateau. It was difficult to make out the trail. Fortunately, the markings on the tree trunks in the forest reassured us. But the snow-covered landscapes were fabulous. We'll have to come back in the spring when the flowers are out—it must be magical!

A very beautiful hike that was quicker than expected with four children aged 8, 10, 11 and 12. The climb to the top of the Aiglette was magical because we were lucky enough to see vultures flying between two rocks less than 5 metres away from us. The picnic at the top of the Aiglette was very pleasant, surrounded by magnificent scenery and vultures. A real mountain atmosphere. A real favourite

Hike completed on 09/10/2020, departing at midday from the car park. A little wind from the Col de Chironne and, above all, the last of the flocks of sheep and their ram between the pass and the Aiglette summit...

Very beautiful view at the summit. Thanks to the author of the hike.
I'm rating the reliability as "Average" because the estimated time of 4 hours seems very overestimated to me.
Walking slowly, it took 1.5 hours to climb and 45 minutes to descend.

We left early to secure a spot in the car park at the pass. There were lots of flowers in the meadows and we were treated to an impressive display of vultures flying overhead. We followed the ridge and had some difficulty clearly identifying the But de l'Aiglette...

A very beautiful hike that is not too difficult. Lots of flowers at this time of year (daffodils, wild tulips, etc.).
Vulture watching: up to eight at a time. Bring binoculars or a camera with a good zoom lens as they stay quite far away.

Hiking with friends and children, very enjoyable but we didn't reach our destination, the But de l'Aiglette. The explanations weren't always very clear.
Despite this, we did see a few vultures, but not at the But de l'Aiglette.
And as geocaching enthusiasts, we were delighted to be able to do a series of caches along the route.
Despite everything, I recommend this hike for the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
