Two castles in Marsillargues

Hike to discover two castles: the Château de Marsillargues, former castle of Guillaume de Nogaret, in the centre of the town, which houses a museum, and the Château de Teillan, a former fortified castle nestled between the Vidourle river, the Camargue horse pastures and the vineyards of the Marsillargues region.

Description of the walk

When arriving in Marsillargues from the south via the D34, park at the entrance to the town in the free car park at the intersection of Boulevard Émile Zola and Boulevard Victor Hugo, near a chapel.

(S/E) Head towards the war memorial on the other side of Boulevard Louis Uni Apollon (towards the town centre), leave it on your left and continue straight ahead on Rue Marcel Mauméjean. Continue along this street when it turns right.

(1) At the stop sign, turn left onto Rue Karl Marx and pass to the left of the church. Leave the arena car park on your right, then take the second street on the right, Rue du Parc. You will come to Boulevard Gabriel Péri. Turn right and walk about 20 metres to reach the entrance to the Château de Marsillargues park.

(2) Enter the park, cross it to reach the castle courtyard, continue in the same direction and you will arrive in front of the orangery. Turn right to exit the park, turn left and continue straight ahead at the intersection, leaving the town hall on your right.

(3) At the T-junction (Rue Jean Jaurès), turn left. Pass Impasse Boissier on your right, then turn right onto Rue Jules Guesde. Take the first right onto Rue Sylvain Magnaval. At the T-junction (Rue Curie), walk about 20 metres to the right to see a beautiful (unfortunately damaged) façade.

(4) Retrace your steps and continue straight ahead on Rue Curie until you reach a roundabout. Continue straight ahead, following the signs for Château de Teillan.

(5) Just after the roundabout, ignore the Chaussée du Vidourle on your left and take the Pont Boulet bridge, staying on the pedestrian crossing.

(6) On the other side of the Vidourle, turn right onto the path on the dyke.

(7) Further on, do not turn down the road that branches off to the left behind a barrier, but continue straight ahead on the dyke until you reach the Clos de Victour signpost.

(8) Follow the path on the left towards Château de Teillan, then, after about 100 metres, keep to the path that branches off to the left, heading north towards a farmhouse (Mas de Praviel), ignoring a signposted path that continues straight ahead.

(9) At the T-junction with a small road, at Mas de Praviel, turn left. When you reach a crossroads, at the Château de Teillan signpost, continue straight ahead towards La Miraillasse. Leave the château on your left, then climb up onto the Vidourle dyke.

(7) Take the path on the dyke in the opposite direction. Shortly before Pont Boulet, descend towards the river if the terrain allows, pass under the bridge, then turn right onto a path to reach the road.

(6) Cross the bridge to return to the centre of Marsillargues.

(5) On the other side, pass the old power station, then turn right onto Chaussée du Vidourle for a return trip along the riverside walkway.

(10) Retrace your steps at the end of the pontoon.

(5) Turn right towards the roundabout and take Rue Robespierre opposite. Immediately, at the fork in the road, keep left and ignore Rue des Pêcheurs on your left. At the intersection with a large plane tree, Place de la Révolution, keep left and follow Rue Pierre Brossolette. You will come to Boulevard Louis Uni Apollon, where you should turn right to return to the car park.

(S/E) From the car park, head south on Boulevard Victor Hugo and walk to the two beautiful houses at numbers 11 and 13 on the left-hand side of the street.

Thank you, Emiliegigi

We also unofficially crossed the old bridge on the way back, but it is really very dangerous. That's why I didn't include it on the route.

Lovely walk on 12/05/24. This hike is not difficult and is more like a stroll. The start in the village is perhaps a little long, and as the castle was closed, we had to go around it. The rest of the hike along the banks of the Vidourle is very pleasant. A little extra about this hike: we slightly modified the route by crossing the old Marsillargues bridge, which is closed to traffic. I recommend it.
