Dent de Crolles via the Terreaux and Rocheplane steps

A splendid but little-used circular, starting from Saint-Hilaire du Touvet and passing through the Pas des Terreaux, the Dent de Crolles, the Cheminée du Paradis and the Pas de Rocheplane.

Much of the hike is on poorly marked paths on steep slopes. The Cheminée du Paradis is a small climbing step, which explains the level of difficulty.

It is possible to extend this hike in a pleasant way, either during the hike itself or nearby.

Description of the walk

Park on Allée de Rocheplane in the "GR® car park".

(S/E) Go around the ruined buildings of the central sanatorium to the north to reach the start of the path to the Cabane du Berger.

(1) Follow the forest path leading to the Cabane du Berger (signpost) which heads south-west. This path climbs gently through the forest before becoming quite steep.

(2) It intersects with the return path at a crossroads (signpost) with theGR® du Tour des Petites Roches. Take the left path, which climbs southwest towards the Cabane du Berger and the Pas des Terreaux. This path soon reaches the hut.

(3) Continue past the Cabane du Berger, still heading southwest on the path, which is almost level at this point. Shortly after a rockfall and avalanche protection structure, the path becomes much narrower. It then passes near a drinking water source and continues southwest without gaining much altitude, but becomes a slightly more exposed strip.

(4) It reaches the Pas des Terreaux, which is a shoulder below the south pillar of the Dent de Crolles, where erosion has exposed terraced rocks. A fixed rope marks the route to follow, which remains almost level. Once you have crossed the pass, the path veers to the right towards the north-west. Continue along this path until you reach the grassy slopes below the Pas de l'Œille. At this point, take the shortest route to join the normal route leading to the Pas de l'Œille: follow any path winding north-east until you reach the comfortable path of this normal route. Continue along this path (a small rocky section is equipped with a 2m cable, which is very useful for crossing the weathered rock) to reach the Œille and then the Pas de l'Oeille before arriving at the summit.

(5) Pass by the southern summit of the Dent (above the southern pillar) to enjoy the view, before following the ridge line that passes by the cross erected at the summit and heads due north-east.

To enjoy the fantastic view, never stray from this ridge, and in particular, never join the path below before reaching the Cheminée du Paradis. The path passes through several peaks, including Rocher du Midi, and shortly after this, it passes along the eastern side of the ridge for about a hundred metres. You will also pass a rocky fault shortly before Rocher Pointu thanks to a rock wedged between two cliffs.

(6) You will arrive at Cheminée du Paradis just after going around Rocher Pointu on its left (west) side. This chimney is not particularly difficult: simply press your back against the east wall (on the right) and climb up the opposite wall using your hands and feet to get across safely. That said, there are no ropes or cables, and you will find yourself a few metres above the void.

Once you're out, do not continue along the strap that continues along the axis of the chimney (this strap quickly becomes very dangerous), but climb up the rocks on the right (east) following vague blue and orange markings to rejoin the ridge. Continue north-east along the path following this ridge.
This path leaves the ridge shortly before an unnamed peak (1938m on IGN) to go around it on the left (west), then return to the ridge just before the Pas de Rocheplane.

(7) Pas de Rocheplane is marked by a signpost and a distinctive rock pillar. Once you reach the pass, take the path descending south-east towards Saint-Hilaire. The path quickly heads south-west under the cliff before plunging down the slope to the east. It passes an isolated rock (Le Truc) before arriving at the Sanglier spring (engineering structure).

(8) At the Sanglier spring, turn right onto a steep path heading south to reach a forest path 30 metres below, which is almost level. Follow this path to the right (south-west) for 400 metres. At a cairn, a red/yellow marked trail climbs slightly to the right: this is theGR® du Tour des Petites Roches. Follow this trail until you reach the intersection with the uphill route (signpost).

(2) From there, follow the uphill route back to the starting point (head towards the hospital on the signpost) (S/E).

Notes

Please note: During this hike, you will be entering a protected natural area. Please respect the regulations: dogs are strictly prohibited (even on a leash); fires, picking plants and littering are prohibited; camping is prohibited (bivouacking is tolerated between sunset and sunrise).

GPS coordinates for the car park (45.307477, 5.875017).

The estimated time seems a little long to me. It took me 6½ hours, including numerous breaks to take photos, observe the many (26) chamois with their young, have lunch, and enjoy a long impromptu conversation with a couple of hikers.

For hikers unfamiliar with the massif, it may be useful to read the descriptions of the photos associated with the hike in order to familiarise yourself with the terrain (the route is not well marked).

Please note: the location of the Cheminée du Paradis (6) is incorrect on the IGN map, which places it about 250m too far north. The OpenStreetMap hiking map gives the correct location.

This route should only be attempted in dry weather, with no rain in the previous 24 hours.

Equipment:

  • a helmet is recommended between the Cabane du Berger (3) and the Pas des Terreaux (4) due to rock falls from the cliff
  • If you are carrying walking sticks, they must be telescopic so as not to get in the way in the Cheminée du Paradis (6).
  • For the same reason, do not carry a backpack that is too large (25 litres max).
  • The route is not very busy, so long trousers are a good way to protect yourself from the nettles that grow on the path between the Cabane du Berger and the Pas des Terreaux.

Water:

  • Unusually for the Chartreuse massif, this hike has several water points on the eastern side of the cliffs:
    1. after the Cabane du Berger (3).
    2. after the Source du Sanglier (8), in a ravine above the hamlet of Les Massards.

Terminology:

  • A sangle (masculine) is a word of Dauphiné origin synonymous with a ledge or vertiginous path.
  • An œille is a word of Dauphiné origin referring to a small rocky needle; in Maurienne, it is called a jœuille, and in Piémont, an ouille. In Paris, where there are none, it is called an aiguille.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

It is possible to combine this hike with the Arche à l'Aiguille, the Chaos de Bellefont and the Sangle Est, but this increases the difficulty and, above all, the time required: allow at least fifteen hours, depending on the route you choose.

Without going that far, the passage through the Sangle Est of the Dent de Crolles is worth the detour but increases the difficulty slightly. See the description in the hike mentioned above. If you opt for this variant, the view from the cliff below the summit of the Dent de Crolles over the snow-capped peaks of Belledonne is breathtaking.

Many chamois usually roam below the Pas des Terreaux. The folds in the terrain mean that the chamois cannot anticipate the arrival of hikers - as long as they remain silent (the hikers, not the chamois ;-). If you hold your camera in your hand as you pass one of these folds, it is easy to photograph them (provided you have a 3x or 4x optical zoom, which my iPhone does not have).

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

I don't see the point in classifying this hike as very difficult. Even though the rocks are smooth, the chimney passage is not difficult at all. It's true that on the last part, you have to watch your step because the descent is faster than expected. The final descent is very steep and slippery with all those small stones. An extraordinary walk with splendid autumn colours. I loved it, despite the crowds on the plateau. For the rest of the walk, we were alone.

Sorry, I was looking at an exported PDF version of the hike, which says "moderate".
Apparently, someone had a change of heart in the meantime. "Very difficult" is spot on.

Thank you!

I'm not sure I understand the difficulty: currently, the hike is rated "very difficult", but your suggestion would lower the rating to "difficult". Given the short climb in the Cheminée du Paradis and the crossing of the Pas des Terreaux, is that really what you want?

Hello, as always, a top-notch route and guidebook, thank you Visorando
A magnificent hike with a total elevation gain of 1,200 metres (the guidebook says 1,500 metres).

However, I suggest changing the difficulty rating to "difficult".
I took the time yesterday to chat with several people, and we all agreed that the Cheminée du Paradis is becoming more slippery, which increases the level of difficulty. There are no cables, so it's really climbing, and falling is not an option. Be careful.

Hello,

Many thanks for this itinerary, which we followed on 21/05/2020. The route and the scenery are magnificent!

We were completely alone for most of the route.
The trail is "almost" perfect. As Zazou34 advised, we continued on level ground to find a clear path up to the Pas de l'Oeille. I think there may have been a slight GPS inaccuracy, as it's hard to believe you have to go straight up. I think this mini detour will be obvious to everyone.

The hike took 6.5 hours as advertised (7 hours with the lunch break) and we REALLY took our time on the descent, which can be a bit technical for beginners.

Thank you!
You're right, I'll come back sometime to make a trail without cutting across the slope towards Pas de l'Oeille. It's definitely more comfortable and probably doesn't add much to the route.

Hello
The junction between the Pas des Terreaux and the Oeille seems a bit unclear and complicated to me. Unless you're a chamois and can climb mountainsides (I'm exaggerating, but it's very, very steep, even though I like climbing), it's better to continue on level ground until you cross the marked trail.
It's really nitpicking for 50 metres, it's true. The rest is perfect.

Hello Zazou,
Thank you for your feedback! The snowfields are starting to melt, but there are still areas covered with snow, so an ice axe may be useful.
Regarding the reliability of the route, could you indicate the areas that justify your rating (B only) so that I can pay attention to them and correct them during a future repeat?
Thanks in advance!

A very exposed route that may surprise those who are less accustomed to or more sensitive to exposed sections, particularly between the hut and the Pas de l'Oeil.

The passage along the ridges is very safe, as the path never runs right along the edge of the cliff.
The Cheminée du Paradis requires a certain level of physical fitness (without which it would be difficult to walk to this point anyway).
There is still a lot of snow on the high plateaus on 1 June, but the trail is fairly easy to follow. Just follow the ridge.
You can take the GR, which seems more relaxing than this path.

Dozens of chamois and marmots – a real treat.

A very original way to climb Dent de Crolles, where you can see lots of chamois on a mountain that is otherwise very busy. To make things a little more challenging, we took the eastern ridge (see Dent de Crolles via Arche à l'Aiguille, Chaos de Bellefont and Sangle Est).

I followed the advice to combine this hike with the one passing through the Arche à l'Aiguille, and I'm glad I did.

When I reached the Pas de l'Œille, I turned off towards the eastern ridge and then continued on to the summit of the Dent, then the Barrère ridge to reach the Arche. I then continued via the Chaos de Bellefont in the opposite direction, then via the plateau below the Dent de Crolles, climbed up to the Cheminée du Paradis and descended via the Pas de Rocheplane.

A total of 11 hours of hiking in magical landscapes!
