Description of the walk

Park at Col du Coq. The path is not signposted by the park’s signs.

(S/E) Take the forest track facing the Dent de Crolles. Follow this track for a few metres until you see some tables on the left.

(1) Take the path climbing up to the right. Purple signs for the “Circuit du Bec Charvet” snowshoe route help you find your way.

In front of you, there is a tree with a purple sign. Turn left and continue climbing the path. It remains clearly marked, but you’ll need to look up occasionally to see where it winds through.

From this point onwards, the only markings are some old blue markings found on a few stones and tree trunks. The path runs beneath the ridge, heading west, and leads out onto a valley which you must cross. Look for the path opposite, a little further up on the left. Follow the trail carefully.

(2) Take the path on the left that climbs towards Bec Charvet. Reach Becen by following the well-marked path. Enjoy the view.

(3) Descend to the right along the path, heading west, and follow it to the Col de la Faîta. There are no markings, but the path is well-defined and remains visible all along the ridge. You will then rejoin theGR®9, which is shared with theGRP® Tour de Chartreuse.

(4) Turn right onto it and follow the red-and-white markings. You’ll reach a track; follow it to the right for a few metres.

(5) Leave the track and continue on the path (GR®9) which climbs to the right. After passing a spring catchment, rejoin the Col du Coq road and follow it uphill for a few metres to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

Very few markings, so make sure you follow the path carefully. Take care at this time of year (late May–early June), as there is a lot of mud in places, making the ground very slippery, especially on the descent towards the Col de la Faïta: proceed with caution.
Route rated as difficult due to the challenging trail navigation and the condition of the terrain.

A lovely walk. We continued on via the Col de la Faïta and on to the Habert de l’Emeindras du Dessus, where we were treated to a superb view of Chamechaude, then returned via the forest track before rejoining the GR as described in the original itinerary

We went for a walk today in lovely weather; it wasn’t very busy (we only came across five people, even though the car park was full).
The signposting is indeed a bit tricky to follow at the start between points 1 and 2, so be sure to check the mobile app.
The walk is pleasant, with a lovely view at Bec Charvet. The return through the forest doesn’t offer a very clear view but is still enjoyable.
Note, however, that there are a few slightly technical sections (especially between point 2 and halfway between points 3 and 4) with narrow, somewhat slippery/muddy paths, which are no problem for experienced hikers but should be avoided with children or people with weak knees or ankles.

A lovely walk, much less crowded than the Dent de Crolles opposite... I’d advise against climbing up to Bec Charvet the day after it’s rained; I imagine the path (which is entirely dirt on the ascent) must be difficult to navigate...

A lovely walk suitable for everyone, though a bit slippery due to the muddy ground.
However, the descent back to the car park from the Col de la Faita isn’t signposted: so we ended up going too far down!

The trail markings were hard to spot, especially in foggy weather. A shame, given the scenery. We took an alternative route before the Col de la Faita; the route is marked with a yellow dot.
