From Westhalten to the Oelberg Chapel

A short walk allowing you to explore Strangenberg Hill, starting from the car park at Westhalten Cemetery. The route suggested here is a return walk, but you’ll easily find alternative routes for the return leg, particularly at the top of the hill.

Description of the walk

(S/E) With your back to the cemetery car park, walk alongside it towards the south and head down Rue de l’Église. You can walk down to the village square to see the fountain and the small prison.

(1) Take Rue Haute to the left, signposted with a Red Triangle, and continue until you reach the Strangenberg ridge

(2) Turn left onto a section of the nature trail with stunning views to the north. Continue along this path until you reach a car park and a tarmac road.

(3) Follow it to the left towards the Col du Neuland.

(4) Turn right onto the Red Cross marked trail, which quickly leads to the Oelberg Chapel, your final destination.

(5) Return to the cemetery car park via the reverse route (S/E). There are numerous alternative routes for the return journey; see the map.

Worth a visit

On Strangenberg Hill, there are numerous viewpoints. Plenty of flowers: pasque flowers in March, orchids in May...

At the Col du Neuland, don’t miss the stone picnic table with sediment dating back to the formation of the Alsace plain.

A pleasant break at the Oelberg Chapel.
