This route, starting from the Westhalten cemetery, leads first to the Zinnkoepfle, then to the Notre-Dame du Hubel crossroads, and finally to Schauenberg via a pleasant forest path. You can return via the same route, or choose to head towards the other hill, the Strangenberg.

Description of the walk

Parking is available at the cemetery car park at the northern entrance to Westhalten, on Rue de l’Église.

(S/E) Walk past the church, down Rue de l'Église until you reach the village square: the town hall is on the left, the tithe hall on the right.

(1) Turn right along Rue de Soultzmatt, keeping the fountain on your right. After just over 50 m, you’ll reach a junction with a road leading uphill to the right. At the corner of this road, you’ll notice a large painting on the gable of the house; this painting dates from the plumbing business that used to be housed there.

(2) Take this road on the right towards the vineyards; it is signposted with a Red Triangle. Atthe first junction, keep left and, about 200 m further on, you will reach a Fork in the road with a reservoir on the left.

(3) Continue to the right; the slope becomes steeper. Carry on to the next junction.

(4) Turn right and walk for about 50 metres until you reach another junction marked by a wayside cross.

(5) Head left up the concrete path. A little further up, continue round the bend to the left and reach a three-way junction.

(6) Turn right onto the path that climbs steeply through the vineyards until you reach a winegrower’s shelter.

(7) Go round it on the right and take the path that climbs along the edge of the vineyards until you enter a coppice. Further on, you’ll reach the heathland of the Domaine de Zinnkoefle, at the junction with a wide path.

(8) Take this path to the right, following the Red Diamond markings, and shortly afterwards you will reach the Oratoire Notre-Dame du Hubel, at the junction with a path marked with a Red Triangle.

(9) Continue straight ahead, due north, following the Red Diamond markings towards Schauenberg. Further on, pass the Banc Désiré Renaud and enjoy the remarkable view over the plain.

(10) Continue northwards to reach the Notre-Dame de Schauenberg Chapel.

(11) Return options:
1) From the chapel, head south along the Way of the Cross and join the Red Cross marked trail. Follow it to the right as far as the Col de Neuland. Then take the nature trail known as the “Route des Croix de Chemin” to return to the car park.
2) Retrace your steps along the outward route (option shown on the map) to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Make sure you’re wearing sturdy shoes!

Worth a visit

At Zinnkoepfle, dry ground; you can take a detour to the summit for the viewpoint.

In Westhalten, behind the fountain, there is a small prison.

At Schaunberg, don’t miss either the viewpoint or the church.
