Take a circular walk in the lower Senonches Forest

This grand tour of the lower Senonches state-owned forest follows the forest’s edge, moving from Rond to Rond – these large crossroads connecting the forest paths. Whilst the surrounding landscape is occasionally visible, the route mostly remains within the woods.
Starting from Parc Arthur Rémy or the holiday village, it heads south through the forest, descending and then ascending the geological fault that forced the River Eure to flow eastwards, whereas its natural course was to head north to join the River Seine. It is only able to do so as it approaches Chartres.
The route passes very close to Belhomert and Fontaine-Simon, villages which can be reached and from which you can also set off. The return journey follows a picturesque path along the disused La Loupe–Verneuil railway line via Senonches. This route is not recommended for those seeking noise and bustle, or who are averse to the tranquillity of the woodland!

Description of the walk

Start at Rond de Battenberg in Senonches. Parking available in the car park along Avenue des Evés.

Yellow and red markings of the GRP® Vallées de la Blaise et de l'Avre

(S/E) With your back to the church, follow the edge of Étang Arthur Rémy. Pass between the bank and the Butte des Sarrasins, a suspected burial mound, following the fitness trail. Cross Rue de la Tourbière near the motorhome parking area. Head up to the edge of a second pond and follow the bank, turning right. Cross Avenue de Badouleau and take the path opposite. At the edge of the forest, turn left to follow the edge of the woods alongside the stadium.

(1) At the end of this path, turn right along the fence of the holiday village and continue to a large crossroads. Turn left, cross the metal footbridge and follow the wide path. Turn left again at the corner of the fence and follow it to its end near the pumping station. Go round the pumping station and turn right a few metres along the main path to reach the gate leading into the grounds.

(2) Cross the path and follow the track along the edge of the woodland to the left. After a damp section, the track curves to the right whilst staying close to a fence on your left. Join the Route de la Sablonnière.

(3) Turn left and follow this stony lane for about 300 m. Leave it and turn right into the path between plots no. 256 and 253. You will reach the Route de Fortin, which is tarmac-surfaced but currently closed to motorised traffic. Turn left onto it and you will reach the Rond du Cerf.

(4) Cross the D140.12 with care and follow the gravel road opposite to Rond Fortin. You will then leave the yellow and red markings.

No markings

(5) Follow the second large, unpaved track on the right, the “Route de la Mare Ronde”. Turn left at the first path. Turn right immediately after a bomb crater on the right-hand side of the path. Follow this path gently downwards to a crossroads where you will find the yellow and red markings of another GRP® route, the Vallée de l’Eure.

Yellow and Red GRP® markings

(6) Turn right onto a path that descends to the end of the La Rachée line.

(7) Cross it and continue straight ahead, following the winding path to the track separating plots nos. 239 and 240. Temporarily leave the yellow and red markings.

No markings

(8) Continue along the well-marked path at the edge of the woodland, which joins the D941 near a picnic area.

(9) Cross the D941 carefully and follow it to the left for a few dozen metres, until you reach a property fence. Turn right onto the path that follows the edge of the woodland, and arrive at the junction with a track coming from the left from Belhomert.

(10) Turn right and head to the end of a wide forest track.Follow itto the right until you reach a remarkable tree, “Le chêne rituel”, where you’ll find the GRP® Vallée de l’Eure.

GRP® markings: yellow and red.

(11) A few metres past the “Ritual Oak”, turn left onto a straight path that climbs gently. You’ll reach a junction at the top of the hill.

(12) Turn left. The path descends steeply through a mix of state-owned and private woodland. Keep following the edge of the woodland until you reach the RD348.6.

No signposting

(13) Turn sharply right onto the path, heading due north, and arrive at the Rond du Grand Veneur.

Yellow PR® signposting

(14) Continue straight ahead along the disused railway line, a wide forest track. At the end, continue right onto a path. After a descent, turn left and arrive a few metres from the track, at the site of the former La Ferrière halt.

(15) Take the path on the right which climbs above a fairly deep ditch, overlooks it for a moment and descends again to get closer to the track. Cross a few streams and climb up a path to the vicinity of the D25.

(16) Continue along the path running parallel to the road until you reach the Ligne de la Rachée.

No signposting

(17) Turn left. Carefullycross theD25 at Rond de Francqueville and follow the stony path on the right. This turns left to cross a bridge over the railway line and arrives at a junction surprisingly still signposted “Rond de Francqueville”.

(18) After the bridge, take the wide lane on the right. Follow it to the entrance of the path between plots no. 183 and 184.

(19) Turn right and follow it until you reach the Route des Ruelles. Turn right again and follow the path to the picnic area near the Rond de Monsieur, with its remarkable trees 100 m away.

Yellow markings

(20) Cross the Haut Cornet line and follow the path opposite along the railway line. Just before reaching the D140, turn right to go up onto the bridge and arrive at the Rond de la Hache.

(21) Cross the D25 with care. Continue straight ahead along the Sablonnière forest track for a few dozen metres. Turn left onto the path below the road. When you reach a ditch, turn right. Shortly afterwards, cross the ditch via two planks. Immediately turn right onto a track that joins the Sentier Sensoriel de l’Orée du Bois. Follow it to the right and exit near the picnic tables; it is advisable to walk around them. Cross the car park and then Avenue du Général de Gaulle.

(22) Follow the path opposite leading to the secondary school. Cross Avenue Poucin (beautiful view towards the church), turnleft and follow the avenue to the Rond de Battenberg (S/E).
