From Schynige Platte to First via Faulhorn

The Faulhorn rises to an altitude of 2,680 metres. It offers a 360-degree view of the Alps, with some peaks over 4,000 metres high, such as the Grosses-Fiescherhorn. The two main access points to the Folhorn are via the Schynige Platte or First. However, with good logistics (see practical information), it is also possible to make a one-way trip and return by public transport. The hike is a gradual climb, but offers splendid views of the first Alpine glaciers and other peaks in the surrounding area. There are restaurants where you can eat and take a break in pleasant surroundings.

Description of the walk

To reach the start of the hike, take the train to Schynige Platte from Wilderswil.

(S/E) With the station on your right, leave it and follow the railway line towards the restaurant. Immediately after, climb a winding path on the right until you reach a crossroads.

(1) Turn left towards Tuba. The trail is flat at first, on the only wooded section of the route. After passing the foot of the Gumihorn, the trail climbs steeply, winding its way up to Tuba. Enjoy the 360° view of the surrounding area and Lake Thun.

(2) Continue along the path straight ahead, downhill. Pass the first crossroads, then arrive at a second one. Turn left and climb towards Oberborghorn. The climb is short, but the last few metres are on very steep steps: take care if you are afraid of heights. The view takes in Lake Brienz and the rest of the route, with the summit of the Ussri Sägissa and the Winteregg ridge.

(3) Descend to the previous junction and take the path on the left. Go down the steps and descend to a fork.

(4) Continue straight ahead towards Faulhorn and First. Be careful of the precipice on some sections after this junction. After a short descent, the trail crosses a plateau before gradually climbing to a fork at Grätli. Turn right and continue to a second fork.

(5) Climb up and turn left, then right, and then go straight ahead twice. The trail then becomes flatter as it goes around the Loucherhorn. It then descends slightly, offering views of the route from the Schynige Platte, and switches to the other side of the mountain, with a view of the second step to be crossed. This second climb is steeper but short, and leads to a plateau.

(6) Leave a very discreet path on the left to climb gradually and go around the Indri Sägissa. Reach the end of the ridge, with a view of the Sägistalsee.

(7) Cross to the other side of the ridge. The Faulhorn is now in sight. After a more relaxing section, begin another steeper climb towards the restaurant.

(8) Climb up the steep slope on the left towards the Faulhorn. This section is a series of climbs separated by plateaus and mini-descents. You will come to a fork near a shelter.

(9) Stay on the ascending path until the next crossroads.

(10) Turn left towards Faulhorn. The climb is steep but short. At the restaurant, pass between the buildings to reach the summit and its magnificent view of the first 4,000-metre peaks of the Alps. You can even see the Schynigge Platte, as well as the route taken to reach the summit and the remaining path to First.

(11) Pass between the buildings again and turn left. Descend the switchbacks to a crossroads.

(12) Continue straight ahead towards First. Pass a fork in the path to reach a shelter.

(13) Stay on the path, winding steeply downhill, with a constant view of the Bachsee. Pass another shelter.

(14) Descend and reach the lake.

(15) Head straight ahead towards First. Then take the fork on the right. As you move away from the lake, you can see the summit of the Faulhorn. Leave a mountain path on the left and reach a junction with several trails.

(16) You can take the paths adjacent to the track or stay on it. Shortly afterwards, they all join together. The track bends to the left, climbs slightly, then turns right and left again before crossing a path.

(17) Descend this trail to rejoin the track further on, after enjoying a view of the First cable car terminus.

(18) Go right towards the building. Cut across the switchback (or follow the track) and, when you rejoin the path, keep heading towards the cable car (E).

To return to the starting point, see the practical information.

Notes

Important information before setting off: this is a one-way hike. To complete the hike, we recommend parking your car at Wilderswil station and taking the train to Schynige Platte. Once you reach your destination, take the cable car to Grindelwald to return to your car. It is then a few minutes' walk to Grindelwald station. You will then need to take the train to Interlaken and get off at Wilderswill station. Allow at least £100 in total for this one-way trip.

Places to eat: Schynige Platte (S), (8), Faulhorn (11) and First (E)

Toilets are available at (S) and Faulhorn (11).

Some sections are vertiginous when accessing the Oberberghorn and between (4) and (5).

Worth a visit

Enjoy the magnificent panoramic views throughout the hike (especially at the summits: Tuba (2), Oberberghorn (3) and Faulhorn (11).
