From Saint-Martin to Fleury via the Ravin de l’Étoile

A lovely walk through the Ternois region and its small villages and hamlets.
The Ravin de l’Étoile is closed during the hunting season.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park opposite Saint-Martin Church.

(S/E) With your back to the church, take Rue de l’Église opposite, heading west. After a left-hand bend, cross the railway line and arrive at the junction with the D 343.

(1) Turn right and then immediately left, heading west-south-west, and leave the road on your right. At the left-hand bend, leave the road and take the path opposite. At the next junction, follow the path straight ahead.

(2) After a right-hand bend, at the junction of paths – which is on the ground but not shown on maps – follow the grassy track. In wet weather, it can be very muddy and runs alongside the Ravin de l’Étoile. Cross the fences at the designated points.

(3) Leave the path and take the road on the right heading north. Pass through Falempin and continue to the T-junction, after a 90° left-hand bend.

(4) Take the track on the right heading north-west. Enter Fleury via the Chemin de Phalempin; ignore the street coming from the right and the next one coming from the left, and keep to the right onto Rue de Libessart. Pass Rue de l’Église and the D98 and continue to the wayside cross.

(5) At the wayside cross, turn left towards the west onto the D98. Pass Rue de l’Église on your left and continue along the D98, Rue de Bermicourt.

(6) At the junction near a pond and on a bend, take the path on the right heading north-north-east; ignore the two paths on the left and carry on straight ahead until you reach the crossroads. Cross the road and follow the grassy path opposite heading north-east. At the next junction, turn left onto the road heading north.

(7) After about 100 m, take the path on the right heading east. It then turns north-east towards Monchy-Cayeux and descends to the D 343.

(8) Cross this departmental road and take the road opposite. Cross the railway line and turn into the first road on the right, Rue d’en Haut.

(9) At the junction after the town hall, follow the road opposite heading north-east, Rue d’Hestrus. Cross the bridge over the Ternoise and, at the next junction, stay on Rue d’Hestrus to the left.

(10) At the next junction, take the path on the right – this is theGRP® Tour du Ternois, heading south-south-east. Follow it for about 2.5 km until you reach the junction near Saint-Martin, where you’ll see the church on your right.

(11) At the junction, turn right and then right again a few dozen metres further on, towards the Place de l’Église (S/E).

Correction: unless I am mistaken, the church in Hernicourt is Saint Vaast Church, not Saint Martin’s.
The street leading to the church is not Rue de l’Église but Rue Place de la Mairie, which continues as Rue du Marais.
It took me quite a while to realise this when I reached the D343.
(2) The grassy path does indeed continue; you cross a field of stinging nettles. Don’t do this in shorts.
Once you reach the third plot you cross, you come up against a wall of greenery directly adjoining a maize field, which is also impassable.
It was raining; caught off guard, I headed home and can’t tell you any more. It’s a shame – the countryside and the people of Ternois seemed very friendly. With more time and less rain, I might have tried doing the route in the opposite direction…

A lovely walk with varied scenery… it took us 3 hours at a leisurely pace!
No particular issues – I’d definitely recommend this walk...
