Where Justice can lead to Hell

Another lovely route in the Ternois hills. Few roads and, in good weather, beautiful panoramic views.
If you're lucky, you may also spot some deer (a herd of six at the end of February 2019).

Description of the walk

Park in Eps, in the small square by the D70, near the school.

(S/E) Cross the small grassy square behind the bus shelter. A short flight of steps leads to the D70. Cross it and take the small street opposite which leads to the cemetery. Cross the cemetery by turning left and exit via Rue de l’Église. At the junction, continue straight ahead (Rue de Pernes).

(1) At the three-way junction, take the road on the left and follow the D70. Just before you reach it, find a good path on the right. Climb slightly along the edge of the woods. Ignore a path on the left. A little further on, the path turns left and reaches the edge of the woods. Take the path (slightly downhill) on the right (still at the edge) which turns left and reaches a junction.

(2) Continue straight ahead (ignoring the lovely descent to the right). The grassy path turns left and reaches a three-way junction.

(3) Turn right to cross the Bois des Vingt. Shortly after leaving the woods, head right along the edge. Ignore the path on the left and reach a junction, just as you leave the woods.

(4) Turn right, staying on the edge of the woodland. Stay on this good path to follow the Ravin d'Herbeval (on the right). This path is not shown on the map, but it is well maintained and you often see roe deer (as well as 4x4s) there. It ends with a short descent. At the bottom, you have three options:
- turn left (path sometimes blocked, but clear on 12/03/2026)
- climb the embankment opposite (easy)
- turn right to join a wide track (used by 4x4s)
all of which lead to a good track that you follow to the left to reach the D70 E4.

(5) Follow it for 200 m to the left. Shortly after the farm buildings, take the grassy path on the right (a nice little climb!). It turns right, then left, and reaches a small road which you follow to the right. 200 m further on, turn right onto a grassy path which turns left, then right, and reaches a T-junction.

(6) Take the track on the left and reach another T-junction. Turn left onto the tarmac. 200 m further on, turn right onto a grassy path. Opposite an (ugly) hut, turn left to reach a T-junction, facing the Bois de la Justice, a spot frequented by deer.

(7) Turn right towards the pylon. Shortly after this, reach a three-way junction where you join the GRP® du Ternois Nord, which you will follow for a good while.

(8) Turn right to head downhill towards the D70. Follow it to the left (take care). At the three-way junction, leave it to take the small road on the left (this is the old route of the D70). Cross the Ruisseau d’Eps and reach a three-way junction.

(9) Turn right along the edge of the D70 (grassy path on the right). A few metres further on, take the path on the left (transformer). It climbs slightly then descends a little (the hollow is often very muddy: you’ll often find yourself walking through the field on the left). Shortly afterwards, it narrows into a superb path under the trees and leads to a T-junction (elevation 70).

(10) Turn right and walk up the gentle slope. Ignore a hairpin bend to the right and continue along the lovely grassy path for a good kilometre. Ignore a path on the left and reach a junction where we leave theGRP®® which heads off to the left.

(11) Turn right and walk for about 400m. Shortly after a path on the left, turn right onto a grassy track that runs alongside the Fond d’Enfer (lovely view to the right). 600m further on, turn left to reach a junction.

(12) You have a choice:
- take a wide path on the right (this is the route) which turns left and becomes tarmac, ending in a steep descent towards Eps. Ignore the grassy path on the left and reach a crossroads.
- wilder, but often muddy: take the path opposite which descends to the woods. There, take the path on the right at the edge of the woods. At the tarmac, head left to reach point 13.

(13) Take Rue du Bois on the left (if you take the path opposite, after 100 m you’ll reach the pretty ford over the Ruisseau d’Eps: you can pop over there for a quick look and make the most of it to clean your soles). This brings you back to the small square near the school (S/E).

Notes

Good walking gear is essential.

Picnics are possible at the Café "Chez Rachelle" in Anvin (a round trip from point (9) following the GRP® du Ternois Sud to the left adds a good kilometre).

This walk can be shortened to a route of around 10 km. Simply take the small road on the right at the T-junction following point (6). The small road leads down to Eps.

Note: to get from (1) to (4), there are other options: all the paths shown on the map exist and are pleasant.

Worth a visit

The title of this hike refers to:
(7) Bois de la Justice, formerly renowned for its jaw traps.
Between (11) and (12) The Fond d'Enfer valley.

A very beautiful and varied hike with small shaded paths, but also with some stunning views. We saw deer and a young cow that had escaped from its pasture. Two beautiful birds of prey and three herons honoured us with their flight. In short, a great day!

Nice hike, done with my daughters (aged 9 and 11), no particular difficulties
No problems with the description.
No deer in sight for us, but lots of cows
From the point where you cross the main road, it's particularly pretty, but also very muddy! Glad I had proper waterproof hiking boots.

Joorange, I follow your hikes quite closely and I'm always out on other trails; surprisingly, I don't see much wildlife. Except in the Créquy and Hardelot woods.
However, when I come home from work in the evening around 10 p.m. (yes, terrible hours), I often see them on the country roads.
I think it's because of the lockdown, but they'll go back to their usual habits in the forests.
Thank you for all the lovely routes you share. 👏🏻

Have you seen any deer?
I've been hiking a lot since lockdown ended (and very early in the morning!).
The result: two deer and one wild boar. Not many!
As for hares and rabbits, they're not exactly rushing out!

Thank you, joorange, for this beautiful route, very well described. Easy to follow, very dry route in May. Didn't see any deer (too bad). Maybe next time.
Very little tarmac, a real treat.

It took me five hours to complete this hike. The weather was perfect, I got a bit of a tan, and the route was very well paced. The break at Rachelle's is essential and comforting. What's more, as nature is in full bloom, the vegetation is regaining its vigour, and I spent the day in communion with it.
Once again, I was forced to observe that farmers do not respect nature very much: a farmer burning tyres in a secluded spot. What can I say and what can I do? Chemical fertilisers on the paths, which they will soon plough back into the soil to increase their cultivable area, plastic tarpaulin and plastic canister waste, paths rutted by machinery (tractors) where a passenger vehicle could no longer pass, and so on and so forth!
