From Paris to Bry-sur-Marne via the Bois de Vincennes and along the Marne

In the eastern suburbs of Paris, along the route taken by Saint Columbanus, we find all the signs of the Columbanian influence that shaped our countryside and landscapes.

The first part of our 26km route through the Île-de-France region is flat, allowing us to take the time to visit the jewels revealed by the churches of Paris, as well as the towns that witnessed the birth of the monasteries that punctuate the route.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Le Chemin Européen de Saint-Colomban

Worth a visit

The most famous churches and monuments in Paris. Île de la Cité; Jardin des Plantes, Bois de Vincennes.
The banks of the Seine and Marne rivers; the locks on the canals and their boating life.
Remains of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre-du-Fossé, whose first abbot was Babolein, a disciple of Saint Columbanus, and the Church of Saint Nicolas.
Bry-sur-Marne: Daguerre, born in 1787, came to live in Bry in 1839. He had previously made a name for himself in Paris as a set designer at the Théâtre de l'Ambigu, then at the Opera. He joined forces with Niepce and discovered the "daguerreotype" process, the starting point for photography. Daguerre died in Bry in 1851 and is buried there.
The André Mentienne Museum in the town has various works by Daguerre as well as a collection of old and contemporary daguerreotypes and cameras.

Thank you for this route, which allowed me to discover places in Paris and especially the Val de Marne department where I live but which I know very little about.
As a result, I turned off at (19) to return to Boissy, which was very pleasant as I walked along the Marne river, passing some very charming spots.

At (3), I recommend taking a short detour to the Arènes de Lutèce. The walk through the Jardin des Plantes is nice but very busy!

A very pleasant and varied route. First, the city and the beautiful Bercy Park, then the Bois de Vincennes and a short detour via St Maur. I stopped at Nogent because it started pouring with rain and I was soaking wet. I still managed to cover 21 km and I'm very happy with my ride.

Some hesitation about which path to take at times.
A very pleasant hike followed the Reuilly Gate to Brie-sur-Marne, with heritage and nature, and superb autumn colours.

A very pleasant long walk with a varied route, taking in urban areas, forests and the banks of the Marne. The sections through town are interesting, with heritage sites to discover, and the banks of the Marne offer a real change of scenery just a few kilometres from Paris!
You can return to Paris on the RER A from Bry sur Marne (about 1 km extra from the end of the route).
Thank you!

A pleasant mix of urban areas, greenery and rivers. Enjoyable discoveries of small suburban towns. Perhaps a little noisy at times when passing alongside or under motorways. We set off on foot from our home in Paris and returned by RER A to Nogent.

The route did not seem clear to us between points 17 and 18: we never saw the footbridge over the A4 motorway. But perhaps we were not paying enough attention?

Very nice.
We were delighted to discover the banks of the Marne. They are beautiful and well maintained.
The path is urban, but still pretty.
