From Mortcerf to Crécy-la-Chapelle along the Grand Morin

A walk from station to station that starts on the edge of the forest. You then follow a maze of paths through the village of Tigeaux. The route continues across a cultivated plateau and then along the Grand Morin. The town of Crécy-la-Chapelle brings this walk to a close on a superb heritage note, highlighted by the Gothic-style collegiate church.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: La Seine-et-Marne du Sud au Nord et de gare en gare

Description of the walk

Starting point and access: Mortcerf station.
- Transilien - Line P, on the section between Paris-Est and Coulommiers.
Take the only exit, Place de la Gare, on the side of platform 1. If arriving on platform 2, take the footbridge.

Red and white + yellow + mauve + blue markings

(S) With your back to the station, turn right and walk along the car park. At the end, turn left twice and take a stony path. Then follow the path closed to motor vehicles, which goes round a house on the left. Pass a hairpin bend and follow a narrow path, then a wider track through the woodland. Keep a meadow on your right at a distance and ignore a few paths branching off to the left. At a junction, continue straight ahead and, further on, cross a stream. After another narrow passage, pass a hairpin bend and emerge onto a small road.

(1) Follow the road to the left and note an old lime kiln on the right. Pass under the railway viaduct.

Red and white + yellow + purple markings

At a left-hand bend, ignore a path coming from the right and stay on the road. After a sign saying “No vehicles over 3.5 tonnes”, leave the road and turn left onto a farm track. Pass a farm shed on your left, ignore a vague path on the right and head towards the forest.

Yellow markings

(2) At the junction just after an electricity pylon and at the edge of the forest, turn right and stay along the edge. Cross a stream and head uphill on the opposite side through the trees. Ignore a path branching off to the right and continue on level ground inside the forest but close to the edge. Further on, go slightly downhill and arrive at a crossroads (gate on the left).

(3) Continue straight on along a track between a fence on the left and a field on the right. Pass by the foot of an isolated house. Further on, the track gives way to a tarmac road which begins to descend. At the junction, cross the road and follow it uphill to the left, on its right-hand verge (which is wider and better sheltered than the left-hand one).

No signposting

Cross Rue de Bréhal on the left and continue uphill on the main road.

(4) Just before a chicane on the road, turn right onto a discreet path closed to motorbikes and horses (chicane). Soon turn right and follow a fence on your left. At the corner of the fence, turn left. Continue along a path through the undergrowth and further on you’ll come to another fence on your left.

(5) Just before the end of the fence, turn right and head down into the woods. Look for a mountain bike signpost and follow it to the left at the next three-way junction. Note the Chapelle de Tigeaux below on the right. At a three-way junction, veer left on level ground (ignore the path leading down to the right).

Green markings

(6) At the next three-way junction, turn right (mountain bike marker) and follow a dilapidated shed on your right. Head downhill, emerge onto a small car park and walk past a house. At the corner of the house (No. 11), turn left. After no. 14, take a narrow path on the right and follow a fence on your right (the IGN map is inaccurate here, unlike the OSM map). Continue between two fences. Pass a chicane, turn left, and immediately come out onto a street; follow it downhill to the right.

(7) At the T-junction, turn right. At the stop sign, cross the D20 and continue straight ahead into Rue de Rézy (hairpin bend). Take the bridge over the Grand Morin and continue straight on, following an old farmstead on your right. At the corner, ignore the path leading off to the right and continue along the road which climbs in a hairpin bend to the left.

Red and white + yellow + green markings

At the end of the hairpin bend, continue along the road (theGR®®1joins from the right). Take another hairpin bend, to the right.

(8) At the start of a left-hand bend, take a track to the left at an acute angle. Climb slightly further then head north across the cultivated plateau. Pass under a medium-voltage power line and head downhill. Arrive at the village of Serbonne and rejoin the tarmac road. Just before a Stop sign, turn left onto Ruelle à Judas and walk alongside the old buildings. When the street turns left, continue straight on along a path that descends to the banks of the Grand Morin.

Red and white + yellow markings

(9) Then turn right and walk alongside the river on your left. Ignore the first path on the right and take the second one. At the end, follow the road to the left. Pass an old mill and reach the sign marking the exit from Serbonne.

No markings

(10) Then turn right onto Route de Serbonne. Walk for a long while along this quiet little road, keeping the Grand Morin on your left. If you prefer to avoid the tarmac, there is a wide grassy verge between the road and the river. Pass the sign marking the exit for Crécy-la-Chapelle and several houses. The road bends right then left at the entrance to a campsite.

(11) At the traffic lights, turn left onto the small road towards the church. Walk downhill and past the church on your right. At the corner, turn right and walk past the entrance gate. Turn right again, climb a flight of steps and come out onto the D934. Follow the road to the left and cross a river (with a wash house below on the left). Walk along the road (Rue Nationale), which is quite busy. Cross the Chemin du Moulin on the left and continue straight on.

(12) At number 62, leave the road and head left towards the swimming pool car park, either by walking down a small lawn or by taking the access road. Cross the car park to the banks of the Grand Morin. Then turn right and walk along the river on your left. Walk past a football stadium and then its car park. At the end of the car park, turn left to stay by the river (do not take the footbridge).

(13) Turn right and follow a tributary of the Grand Morin. Pass the tennis courts. Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing, continue along the path opposite and briefly follow the signposting (which is of little use here). Follow the river on your left and note the numerous footbridges connecting the path to the houses on the opposite bank.

(14) Further on, ignore the signposts directing you to turn right or left and continue straight ahead along a car park. At the roundabout (belfry on the left, war memorial on the right), turn right towards the station. Cross Rue du Bon Accueil on the right-hand side and immediately turn left onto Avenue de la Gare. You will soon find the station (E) on your right.

To get back home:
- Tram - Line T14 towards Esbly, then change to line P for Paris-Est or Meaux.

Notes

Train timetables: see the Transilien website.

For motorists:
Arrange for at least two vehicles, one at the car park of each of the two stations, which are located on different sections of the P line. Using a single vehicle would require a change at Paris-Est station.

Hiking boots are recommended. There are a few damp sections, between (S) and (1) and between (9) and (10), but for the most part the route follows paths in very good condition or quiet roads. This hike can therefore be undertaken at any time of year.

No water points marked on the route. Bars, restaurants and shops in Crécy-la-Chapelle, particularly near the station.

A 1:25,000 map is required (at the very least the one accompanying this description).

Alternatives in the event of flooding of the Grand Morin:
In the event of flooding of the Grand Morin, at Serbonne, the path and the road along the riverbank may be cut off (this was the case in late January 2020).
- At the entrance to Serbonne, just before point (9), do not take the Ruelle à Judas but continue straight on; at the Stop sign, go straight on again and cross the village; rejoin the main route just before the old mill.
- On leaving Serbonne (10), go straight on and cross the Grand Morin; follow the D20 road to the left for about a hundred metres; then climb a steep path on the right; follow theGR®®1, cross the cultivated plateau and descend towards Crécy; rejoin the main route after crossing a tributary of the Grand Morin, shortly afterwards (13).

Hike undertaken by the author on 8 February 2020.

Hello, great walk, thanks for the description. A few minor points: the first section was very pleasant up to Tigeaux; after Serbonne, along the Grand Morin, it’s a road with a lot of traffic on 1 May, why not take the path running parallel 200m to the east, which goes over the fields and then along the edge of the forest between 9 and 11 (in theory this path is closed to motorbikes/scooters/mopeds > sign stating this; unfortunately, on 1 May, four trial bikers were ‘playing’ in the undergrowth and on this path – a shame!!). Then, between 11 and 12, just after the collegiate church: a major, very busy road, similar to a main road, and it’s no longer possible to head down towards the swimming pool due to a huge construction site stretching for 500m (incidentally, I don’t understand how they’re allowed to build 200m from the collegiate church!!!); you have to go past the stadium to reach the water’s edge. Be careful: there are many open stretches across fields – remember to wear a hat in sunny weather – and quite a bit of tarmac too. One final detail: it’s no longer a train but a tram (T14) running between Crécy and Esbly: one every hour!

A lovely, refreshing walk with a pleasant variety of scenery, as nature awakens from winter. We didn’t meet many people, except, of course, when we arrived in Crécy-la-Chapelle. Getting there was easy, thanks to the two train stations. Thank you very much for this route.

I preferred the section up to Tigeaux. We actually walked down towards the road and the village to get a better view of the chapel. It’s on the right just past the town hall. We had a picnic on a meadow near the Grand Morin, opposite the chapel.
We didn’t have the energy to go back up to rejoin the trail. We stayed on the road and rejoined the route after point 7.
Then, in my opinion, there was a lot of road. There isn’t really a wide grassy verge available after point 10!!
On the other hand, the advantage is arriving via a lesser-known side of the collegiate church.
The return journey to Crécy station is very pleasant.

An easy walk on a crisp, misty autumn day.
We started at point 2, following on from the route entitled “From Marles-en-Brie to Mortcerf”.
The sound of chainsaws and trees falling on the banks of the Grand Morin between Tigeaux and Serbonne.
No one on the paths, but we arrived in Crécy just as school was finishing.
One point: at point 9, the second path is marked “private road” and there is a red and white Red Cross cross on a post at the entrance. We passed through without any trouble, but perhaps we should have continued along the Morin to the mill.

A lovely walk near Paris, through varied landscapes (the Mortcerf Forest, valleys and the Briard plateau, paths through the woodland, and the banks of the Grand-Morin), culminating in the collegiate church at Crécy-la-Chapelle.
Very few unpleasant sections (200 m on the pavement of a busy road in Tigeaux and another stretch in Crécy-la-Chapelle), which is quite an achievement in the Île-de-France region.
Thank you very much for this description.
