Description of the walk

In Mézy, you can park near the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin, close to the Surmelin Valley tourist sign.

(S) Take the path to the left of the church and follow the arrow towards Moulins. Turn right, walk alongside the Marne and cross the footbridge over the Surmelin at the confluence of the two rivers. Head up to the right towards the village and take care when crossing the railway line. When you reach the first houses, continue to the right along the Chemin des Grands Clos, then turn left onto Rue du Patis.

(1) At the stop sign, cross the D1003 and take Rue de la Fontaine opposite, then turn right onto Rue de Parroy. Head up Rue Collinet to the left towards the vineyards. At the metal gate, turn left, then right, and continue up to the forest.

(2) Follow the edge of the woodland and, on the descent, turn left into the forest. Follow the path on the right; the Pierre des Cosaques is on the right as you go downhill. Leave the forest and head down towards the village.

(3) At the junction, take Rue de Parroy on the left. Continue straight on past the vineyards and follow the fences of the detached houses until the path joins Rue de Launay (D85).

(4) Follow it to the left, following the arrow towards Connigis. Turn left onto Route Impériale. Turn right onto the stony track, following the bottom of the vineyards. At the junction, head down to the right towards the village.

(5) Head left onto Rue de Launay – you can have a picnic in the old washhouse – then head up to the left towards the vineyards before the last house. Turn right and walk along the foot of the vineyards. Head right, towards the château at the entrance to Connigis, and take the road on the left towards the village. At the junction, follow the arrow towards Monthurel opposite. Take the D85 to the next village.

(6) In the centre of Monthurel, follow the arrow on the left towards Celles-lès-Condé and head up Rue de Janvier. Turn right onto Chemin des Besnardes and continue along Chemin des Vignes. Finally, head towards Celles-lès-Condé. Walk down into the village via Rue de Janvier, which continues to the left until it reaches the D85.

(7) Follow it to the left (Rue de Monthurel), following the arrow towards Baulne-en-Brie, until you reach the town hall. At the stop sign, cross the D20 and continue straight ahead along Rue de Nogent. Follow the path between orchards and farmland to the hamlet of Nogent.

(8) Carry on straight ahead and, at the junction, turn left onto the road towards the hamlet of Montchevret

(9) At the entrance to the hamlet, head down to the right along Rue Principale, then turn left towards Malaquais. Continue along the farm track, following the Surmelin stream, to Baulne-en-Brie. At the entrance to the village, turn right onto the Grande Rue (D420) towards the church. Head down to the car park on Rue des Saules and go to the area near the tourist information sign for the Surmelin Valley (S/E).
