In the Rouquié woods above Lake Raviège

A walk designed for families staying at the Rouquié campsite, on the shores of Lake Raviège. It has the advantage of being suitable for walking during the hottest part of the day.
The route, often lined with dry stone walls, winds through a landscape of old terraces now covered in woodland, with a few views over the valley

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the campsite, follow the D14E2 road towards La Salvetat for 200m; you’ll soon reach the hamlet of Rouquié. Continue to the top of the main street.

(1) Take the hairpin bend to the left and follow the path uphill. Pass an old bread oven on your right. The ground becomes wet for a few dozen metres; this is due to an unchannelled spring. When you reach the signposts, take the path to the right.

On your left, walk alongside large retaining walls made of beautifully laid dry stone, whilst on the right, a clearing offers a lovely view of Lake Raviège. A few hundred metres further on, the path joins a wider, almost level forest track. Continue along this path until you reach a crossroads in full sunlight.

(2) Then leave the wide road onto natural terrain, staying on level ground – do not go up to the left, but stay on the same contour line by taking the narrower natural path.

The gently descending track passes by an old ruined house, situated below, whilst streams cross its path via culverts. Here and there, looking into the undergrowth, you can spot the glistening reflections of water, signs of their presence as well as that of springs.
After about 500 metres, the path turns sharply to the right, down a steep slope.

(3) From here on, it is a fairly narrow tractor track, with a deep gully running down the centre caused by the uncontrolled flow of rainwater at this point. For about 200 metres, the descent is somewhat uncomfortable due to the uneven surface, but it is safe. The slope then levels out, and the path widens. It runs parallel to the Rec Rouge (the word ‘rec’ means stream in Occitan), situated some fifty metres below. On the upstream side, the path once again passes ancient walls, on which beautiful ferns can be seen in places.

You will then come across the first houses, signalling the proximity of the hamlet, and continue quietly along the path towards the A-road. About thirty metres from the road, take the sunken path that climbs up to the first crossroads in the hamlet of Rouquié.

(1) Gently head back down the path you took on the way up to return to the campsite which served as the starting point for the hike (S/E).

Notes

An interesting and relatively short walk. The aim was to find a local route that wasn’t too long but offered an activity other than those associated with a lakeside campsite and leisure centre. This was all the more important as there is no footpath going round the lake.

The terrain is rugged, with an elevation gain of around 100m.
The paths are wide but often stony, with some wet patches or eroded sections. Consequently, pushchairs are not suitable.
The walk is suitable for children over 3 years old who have already walked on mountain paths or tracks. Do not wear sandals or flip-flops.

As a group of adults, we completed the walk in 45 minutes; the following day, with two young children aged 3 and 6, it took us 1 hour 45 minutes.

Please note that mobile phone reception is poor in this area. Hikers would be well advised to use the caching function for the IGN base map before setting off on the walk.

Worth a visit

The route can serve as a guide to discovering the site’s rich heritage and natural beauty.

The path bears witness to the evolution of landscapes shaped by humans but which are gradually disappearing due to the rural exodus of the past century. Many terraces have been entirely overtaken by beech woodland, but where the hedge trees have become vegetative ruins after growing excessively large.

  • Passing through the hamlet of Rouquié, old bread oven
  • Views over Lake Raviège
  • Exploring the old terraces and ruins of former dwellings in the woods. Evidence of ancient agricultural settlement.
  • Identifying trees, presence of burrows, old walls, springs, fountains, pretty gardens,

Mountain atmosphere, the sound of babbling brooks

A short, easy walk that lets you enjoy the scenery around this beautiful, large lake. We had a picnic at the top of the car park signposted at the bottom of the village (which has toilets and picnic tables).
At this time of year, we didn’t come across any other walkers... The walk takes you through the woods, where we found a lovely porcini mushroom!
We really enjoyed it; the route details are clearly explained. Thank you.

A very pleasant walk; you soon find yourself in the undergrowth and then in the forest, which is very dark. Be sure to follow the signs carefully, as you leave the main path to take a route that is somewhat obscured by the vegetation. The return to the lake is accompanied by the sound of the stream flowing below, and the first houses signal your return to the hamlet.

It’s true that the main street isn’t very wide.

A lovely little walk!
Just for the beauty of the beech trees, especially on the first part of the route, this walk is well worth the short trip.

As for the description, it would be better to say ‘the lane that goes uphill’ rather than ‘main street’, but that’s a minor detail.

Thank you for your comment. I really enjoyed describing this route, which is right on the campsite’s doorstep. Unfortunately, too few families make the most of it. It’s a shame; many prefer the legendary hikes, which are often overcrowded, and forget that right on their doorstep there’s also plenty to be found that brings real joy.

A short walk I did today – it’s quick but lovely. There are some very pretty streams and the path is well maintained.
I would, however, recommend wearing high-top hiking boots as in places the path is also a small stream (~3–4 cm of water).
Had no issues with the GPS/mobile data for following the route; with Orange, the signal is spot on.

Thanks for the route
