Cornwall Gold, along a new trail, then on the old tramway to Portreath

The walking trail starts in nearby Redruth, known as the Tolgus Trail. This section starts in the Cornwall Gold car park. The trail follows an old mining stream down the valley before meeting up with an old mining tramway, which in its day went from Portreath to Devoran on the south coast. The old mining works, now a visitor attraction, features exhibitions of mining history, other attractions, and a café.

Description of the walk

(S) The start >>> , heading northwest,to get onto the path, the Gold Centre boundary fence leads visitors/walkers into and through the displays, and the cafe, it is free to enter; the app follows the outside of the premises.Once outside and head north, exit the path by the buildings and go through the gate. Turn left over the bridge, and then right onto the trail. As the path passes over the stream again, near the road, follow the signage to cross the road. At the bridge, there is a marker for the time/distance back to the start, which could give a guide to personal pace.

(1) Crossing the main road, follow the directions. Do not cross the road at the bend in the road. On the opposite side of the road, head west, turning right at the next junction, up the hill. The old tramway path is signposted. Turn left heading west, and stay on the path to the gate. This is the hamlet of Bridge.Where the path meets a house, keep right with the path, and continue to the next gate and road,

(2) The route now follows behind the houses, walking along Sunnyvale Road, to the main road. At the main road, heading south,at the bend look for a bridge with a sloping embankment, this was the incline, which is explained on the harbour information board. Then continue west towards the seafront. This is nearly halfway, check the time, and consider if there is sufficient time to return, before closing. Option - catch the bus to Bridge and then meet the return track by the house.

(3) Head towards the northeast corner of the car park, where there are steps leading down to more houses and a public house. Walking around, and left of the pub, crossing the car park, heading to the harbour, there is a small brick hut, walk around, at the harbour side, handrail around the edge of the harbour, and out to the white building, up some stairs.

(4) This is the furthest point, and the route will head back, southeast to the main road and left (2), picking up the route entering the village. Follow the path back to the start (E)

Worth a visit

  • Cornwall Gold - The history of mining, the statue of two Cornish miners who found a huge nugget of gold in Australia, and eating an all-day breakfast off a shovel.
  • Portreath - Was once a mining sea port, where coal was imported from Wales and ore was exported. The now Coast to Coast cycleway was once an ore tramway to the south coast.
