The Great Flat Lode, Carn Arthen, Piece, and Carn Brea Monument

From the well-published Great Flat Lode Trail, with the whole area having a history of mining for tin and copper, it is perhaps no surprise that there are many routes across the whole area, where perhaps the miners used to get from their homes to the mines where they worked. It's when walking on such paths, one can only wonder about the hard work and hours they toiled. That is where we now see green fields where once was a patchwork of mining activities. This walk passes through some hamlets where perhaps the miners lived.

Description of the walk

The start for this walk W3W>>

(S/E) Cross the railway bridge and head south, walking along the path next to the industrial yard, meeting the main path. Head southwest and continue to a small hamlet of Tregajorran, as the track meets the road, see the white cottage.

(1) The stile is next to the white cottage, the path leads across fields and heads in a southerly direction, to a wooded area with some buildings.

(2) The path appears to enter a garden, this is the designated path, 'there is a conservatory to the right', walking onto the drive and to the main road. Caution: the road can be busy, keep close to the hedge. Turn right and continue for about 30m before crossing the road onto another track, on the opposite side. The old country track leads into fields, handrails the hedges towards Higher Carnarthen Farm.

(3) In the corner of the field, cross over the wall stile, entering into another permitted right of way across and close to the farmhouse, there may be a warning sign "Beware of the Bull". Follow the farm drive out to the country lane, then turn left and handrail down the road and to the right. As the lane rises, and the hedges 'open up', a gate will be straight ahead, at the point where the road veers sharply left.

(4) Proceed over the stile and south across the field, as the route starts descending, a hedge will appear from the left, at the bottom left-hand corner. Cross over the stile and handrail, the hedge to Treskillard Farm, go through two sets of iron farm gates, pass by the barn and the farm, meeting up with another lane. Head in a southeasterly direction, to the hamlet of Treskillard, turn left at the bottom of the hill, and continue to follow the road to.

(5) Leaving the road up a track, which leads up and past 'Wheal Francis' disused mine workings. Option 1: at the first ruined mine engine house, turn left, which leads directly to (6) after crossing the main road and turning left. Option 2: If this were a start point, continue on the path. The car park will be on the right, or, exploring the other parts of this large site, near the car park, a path will lead back onto the path of the route as well.

(6) To the right of the Inn, cross over the stile and cross the field, over a stile into another field. This crosses an open field where crops may be growing, and the path may become obscured. Head to the large mound in a northwesterly direction, handrail the west edge of the mound. The exit from the field should be visible. Climb down off the field, using the wall steps, left then right, to another stile. The route follows the line of the fence to the lower right, where there is another stile. Turn right up the track to Carn Brea Monument.

(7) At this point, the route follows a track up and over Carn Brea, with the Monument, Castle Folly (now Restaurant), and the views, descending down towards Carn Brea Village. Option: To miss out on the route across the Carn Brea, at (7), continue on the path, northwest down the lane to (1), turning right to return to the start.

(8) Turn left, and keeping left, handrail the designated track back to where the path crosses the railway line, before turning right, alongside the industrial site, to the start (S/E).
