Portreath, Sally's Bottom, Wheal Tye, and Cambrose

Walking along a section of the South West Coast Path, a section which could be described as the longest outdoor staircase in the southwest. Then passing an interesting old mining site, with many ruins to explore. The route then follows a trail inland to meet up with another long-distance walk, walking part of the Coast to Coast, before heading back to the start. The walk, in effect, is around an old RAF Portreath airfield, which had an interesting past during the Cold War, then known as Nancekuke, and now the RAF's again. RRH Portreath with a Fire Service training site.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the seafront car park, head east along the main road, which then veers left. As it veers right at the square, turn left, and northwest up Lighthouse Hill.

(1) The route heads north, along the cliff edge to the Huer hut, the pepperpot. After taking in the view and catching your breath, the route returns and continues up the hill, past all of the properties and fields on the left, which were parking areas. The road continues up the hill to the entrance to the old airfield. Walking further up the road, see old buildings in a field (B), return to the path. There is a well-used coastal path to follow. Handrail the coastal path. After exploring the old mine workings, continue to the gate.

(2) Follow the track southeast, which meets a lane. Turn right, on Forthvean Road, southwestly, past another airfield gate. Continue along the road, then right down and south, to the next junction. Turn right, then continue down to the road junction.

(3) The joining road leads to the Coast-to-Coast trails; look for signage. Follow all the signs for the Coast-to-Coast, heading southwest, which will lead to Portreath. Leaving Sunnyvale Road, at the square, past the telephone box to the Townhouse with vehicle underpass.

(4) At the edge of the harbour wall, an option, to see the entry of the harbour, walk to the end, and see another huer hut. Handrail around the harbour to the end, where the route goes around the small hut, across the car park, between the INN and houses, continue west, to the steps up the wall to the car park and (S/E).

(B) The buildings were part of the Nancekuke test facility, the small arms store, which is passed on route, further along the coast. There was graffiti, with a marriage proposal; you will know when you see it.
